ram voltage?

I read on the unofficial FAQ thats in the works that you increase the ram voltage at some point when you need it much like when you increase voltage in your cpu when you need it. My question is.. when do you know that you need to up the ram voltage? in other words, what is the proper way to overclock with the ram voltage?

right now i just started my 2500+ overclock

currently running:
shuttle an35 ultra
512mb ddr400 crucial cl3 @ "aggressive" (something like 3-3-3)
2500+ barton @ 11 * 200fsb (ddr400) 1.65v (temps stay below 55c on load with stock cooling)

highest i've gone
512mb ddr400 crucial cl3 @ "optimal" (all timings [even more] relaxed)
11 * 220fsb (ddr440) 1.8v (temps get too hot on full load with stock cooling)

i tried upping the dimm voltage here and there before relaxing timing but i didnt notice any difference, maybe im not using it properly, so can i expect to get higher fsb out of this ram?
 
umm maybe but u said it got to hot so maybe u have to change that stock cooling and then proceed. u should run prime95 though to see if its even stable for 24hrs.
 
right, i already did some stability testing, I'm just wondering how much further i can expect to go with this ram.. if ram voltage makes a difference or not basically..

because right now i can get 2.2ghz with stock cooling and stock voltages, i can reach 2.4 with 2.8vcore (and the accompanying heat) and relaxed timings. i could probably get away with using high end air if i wanted to stay here.

if my ram can go higher i can go even higher than 2.4, but i will need even better cooling, and i would probably have to do something with my ram. That is.. buy better faster expensive ram, or up the vdimm or something? I just dont know what to expect from vdimm and my ram and its hard to test it right now since my im heat limited.

i've been considering watercooling and im about to make the jump.. but only if it would allow me to O/C further.. and i dont feel like buying expensive ram right now... so im wondering how high my ram will allow me to go

i run my vdimm at 3.2v all the time

helped me get to 235fsb :D
 
3.2v... hahah mine only goes 2.6 and 2.7, i guess thats not going to help me much then?
 
he probably has a voltmod or something. what u can do is push that ram until u get stability issues, i really have no idea as to what crucial can do but why not test it out and see. u have to fix that heat issue first.

nah, i just got a DFI Infinity :)


i forgot that a lot of the shuttles don't have major OC option in the BIOS as far as voltages, etc.

Qwerty's right though, i would find the highest fsb the ram will go then up the multi (if possible) from there.
 
ahh... paradoxical dillema

can't find the limits of my ram before i get cooling... can't get cooling before i find the limits of my ram

i just dont want to spend $100 on water cooling only to find that my ram is stuck at 220fsb.. in which a $40 heatsink (or less) probably would have done fine..

i would invest in a new mobo before i invested in some water cooling

or in your case even some new ram, if you are that serious about reaching a high OC
 
As for voltages one option if your board is volt limited is that new device coming from OCZ that can allow DDR voltages up to 3.9V along with providing a cleaner power path. If I recall correctly the price was gonna be ~$45US.

well i dont think the an35 ultra is too bad of an overclocker (i hope not, i just bought it). For overclocking it's on par or better than the abit NF7s, DFI lan parties only overclock better some of the time.... not all of the time.. depending on the individual board. Anyways i dont think there are too many unsatisfied an35 overclockers.... its not your typical OEM board.. these guys seem to have great luck at least.. The Rebels Haven I haven't really read too much into this forum but i noticed one guy said "I have 4 of the boards. 3 will run at 270 and the 4th will only go to 250.... I ordered 2 more!" Many others seem to reach 250fsb okay.. of course im not say its guaranteed.. its not guaranteed for any "better" board either though..

and the whole point of my post was to see if there was a way to predict the limits of my ram without actually testing it at those speeds (i cant.. i dont have decent cooling yet), buying new ram is the easy way out =D

i figured if i can do 220fsb with relaxed timings maybe someone could tel me what i could expect to reach with increased vdimm.
