Rainbow Six: Vegas Question

Here is a question regarding Rainbow Six: Vegas: is it possible to customize one's character without an additional controller? I'm pretty sure that the character customization menu is only accessible after going to multiplayer options and then selecting a game mode, namely split-screen. But, after selecting split-screen, it requires you to have more than one controller to let you progress beyond that menu. Being one without an additional controller, I am eager to know whether or not I am able to customize my character without investing in another controller.
