RAID recovery and odd behavior..

My friend is running a RAID array, I believe he said it's RAID 5, with five disks. Last night we were doing some updating and installing to clean out spy/adware, and the installer froze in the middle of trying to install WinXP SP2. On restart, a dialog came up that recommended removing the failed installation using Add/Remove Programs, so we did that next.

When the system restarted after the uninstallation, it was beeping and CHKDISK attempted to rebuild the array or something. It can get into Windows now, but the POST was still giving the status of the 4+1 array as 'critical' and Explorer is not functioning well as there is no taskbar. There's also a black horizontal bar extending partway across the desktop just under halfway up.

Friend had to leave for work, and charged me with finding out what's wrong and what to do about it (and I've never done anything with RAID before :confused: ). Any insight, suggestions, or instructions on how to pull up more useful info would be very welcome.

Edit: System is now sitting in Windows, got Explorer back, it appears to be trying to re-detect and install drivers for the RAID controller, and the Microsoft System Management BIOS Driver also is flagged as corrupt/unloadable in Device Manager.
