raid jbod question

can disks be added to a raid jbod setup without lossing data already on the disk?

It depends on the controller but I'd venture to guess that 95% of them will allow it without a problem.

Note, though, that you'll have to either add more partitions or resize the existing ones. If it's NTFS, Partition Tragic might work; Linux filesystems vary but usually resize nicely.
