ok so I have 3 drives, one with existing data (that I want to keep) and two identical new hds.

This is the setup i want:

old hd is the boot hd, with the old information kept on it
the 2 new hds act as a data repository (moved from old hd when all is said and done), thus i would like to set this up as a raid 1 (mirror).

is this how I set it up?

array 1: stripe with 1 drive
array 2: mirror with 2 drives

i read that creating a striping array erases all information on the drive tho. that would be bad. :eek:
 
WHy would you stripe one drive? That would hurt performance more than help. Just plain a bad idea. I think you thouroughly need to research raid before you attempt this because based on what you want to do, you don't have a good understanding of it's limitations and it's advantages and it may not be a good choice for you at all.

and yes you can do raid 0 on one drive using software raid under windows 2000 with 2 partitions on the same drive. I've done it in my dumber days.
 
fine but i still need to get the data off the old drive onto the new. will making a one hd drive stripe array remove all the info?

the old == 175 gb the new == 160 gb so copying the old is not possible
 
Striping.... do you mean cloning? The first drive isn't on an array, it's just an individual disk. You would use backup/cloning software to backup to the mirrored array...but why not just have the array as your primary system drive? Raid 1 protects against individual disk failure, so it would do more good like that.

Though, all in all, it's profoundly better to have automatic backups to an external drive.
