RAID Controller needs rebuild every reboot

I have an Abit BD-7 Raid, and i have 2 WD120 GB disks mirrored for data stability. Every time I have to reboot the machine, when the Raid controller initializes (this is after the IDE channels are initialized) I get an error saying that mirror was not completed. I have rebuilt the mirror from scratch over and over (Within the high point software during BIOS) No matter what, a reboot says that it is not complete.

This can be quite frustrating since I cannot remotely reboot the machine (since I never get back into windows unless someone rebuild the mirror array, or cancels the rebuild) And on top of that, im not even sure if the drives are even really mirroring!!

Any suggestions??

The Raid info is stored in the motherboard bios. If you bios battery has died. It can not save the info when you power down. Replace the bios battery. Then let us know if you still have the same problem.

Highpoint controllers save RAID parameters in the HPT segment of the BIOS and also write the params onto the disks in the array(s). This is why you can usually hook up two disks in a prebuilt array and have it be detected by the controller. Doing so won't work in all situations, but it does in many. I'd actually be concerned that the drives or controller are shot. Run WD's utility set on the drives to eliminate them from suspicion, then see if you can find a newer BIOS and/or driver set for the HPT.

I had a striping array of 2 WD 60GB harddrives on my ABIT SA6R P3 motherboard with the HPT370 controller.

When I upgraded to ABIT IT7-MAX2r2 I moved my Stripping array over to its HPT374 controller and it worked without a hicup.

That doesn't completely help you with your problem but it should eliminate the battery as a possible problem.

I would either run the WD diagnostic on the drives independantly and/or I would run some a smart monitor on the drive for a little while to see what it reports. You may have to mve the drives back over to the Intel controller to do the above. Ive not had a mirror go bad on a highpoint controller. I've got 2 SATA 160gigs now on my MAX2 running strong.

A few months back the HPT37x on my ST6 decided to break a mirror randomly. It was trivial to fix, but perplexing. Never did find the cause.

The Hard drives are both brand new (talking a few weeks here), but before I had the WDs I was using both RAID channels in order to have 2 set of 2 drives mirrored. I had the same situation with the 4 older drives (Rebuild not complete on every reboot). Id 99.9% gurantee it's not the drives....

As far as the controller its self.... I mean when im in windows I can access all the data perfectly from the RAID'ed drives...

I guess I will look for an updated BIOS and updated HPT driver and give that a shot.
