RAID Controller Expansion Cable?

Through a SAS expander.
The bigger brother of that card (4320) is purportedly compatible with the HP expander. There's also the Intel RES2SV240 but I don't know anything about compatibility.

You basically connect your controller to the expander with a SFF-8087<->SFF-8087 cable, and then utilize more fan-out cables from the expander to your drives. That's how I have mine set up currently, Areca 1680LP to HP SAS expander and 5 sets of fanout cables.

Cool. I will have to see what is compatible. I probably should have just got the 4320, but didn't want to spend the extra money. Looking at the prices of the expanders, it was probably a stupid idea on my part. Although I can probably get by with just 4 hard drives for now.

Depends on how high of a port count you eventually want to get to, and how many PCI-E x4/8/16 slots you have to spare, as the HP expander requires one.

If you're never going to exceed 8 drives, then maybe it would've been cheaper, as the 4320 is $150 more then the 4310 at Newegg.

The cost of a low end RAID controller + the HP SAS expander is typically cheaper then buying a RAID controller with a high port count.
