Can a hardware Raid card be used as a sata expansion card? I remember reading somewhere that you can flash a hardware raid card to be used basically as an expanion card.
This is my Adaptec 51645 that i bought when i was still considering hardware raid and the one I would want to flash.
This is my Asus Motherboard and my Chenbro case. Has 2 x 4 hotswap bays installed. Running Server 2012, dual xeon E5335 chips with 8GB of ram and 16GB more in the mail. Picked up the whole thing on Craigslist for a good price.
End goal is to run snap raid with 5 2TB drives (from old raid 5 array) and 3 4TB drives to populate all the hotswap bays. Best configuration to have 7 drives with 1 4TB drive for parity?
I will continue researching, but any ideas on the best way to set this up is appreciated.
