I have two 40GB HDDs laying around and am wanting to put them in RAID 1 before throwing an operating system on them. Thing is, they're not the same hard drive type - just the same size. I know in RAID 0 this would hinder performance - is this also true for RAID 1? If so, would it be all that noticeable?

Thanks in advance :).

Well, if they're different in cache size then there might be some degradation, but if they're pretty much the same disk the only thing you'll lose is a few megabytes when you do mirror.

the performance will be at most as fast as the slowest drive. If your RAID controller is smart, there shouldn't be any problems, but if there are too many differences between the two drives, I could imagine that the set is likely to break during normal operation.
