raid 0 partions?

Hello disk storrage forum, i hardly post here but today i am going outside of being normal. This is my first Raid setup in actual use and was wondering if i am doing it to match its most potential, i have two 40gig 7200rpm 8mb cache drives and running them in raid 0. Now one of my computer teachers said sumthin about how when you partion your drive you are actualy speeding your stuff up so i divided my drive into 3 parts (one for games, one for downloads, and one for p0rn), now i was wondering if this is practical at all or not. Oh i also have my Games partion in fat32 because its speedier than NTFS although not as secure. Now i know this isnt the best way to run windows but i dont have a floopy drive and dont understand how to slipstream my winxp cd at all but i have a 15gig 5200rpm drive running windows... I will install windows on my raid one of these days but for now i dont really care that much, any help or ideas would be helpful, thanks.

Should i have a page file on my games drive? right now its at 1.2gig file thanks again.

first of all, you didnt mention what raid controller you was using. For example. if you was using a highpoint, make sure you are set up for 16k stripe.
next: make sure your drives are jumpered as cable select. should not make a difference but it does.

next: it is good to break up your raid into various sizes. anything over 50-100G is going to start slowing down.

ntfs vs fat32. Just make it ntfs. the performance difference is negelible and you get some benefits. ntfs is a journaled filesystem that is actually quite robust. fat32 isnt. I am not sure about other people, but I found it unstable in 2000 and xp. Also, if your partition is larger than 8 to 10G, fat32 starts getting slow. ntfs really starts to shine with partitions from 6G on up.

i run windows on a 30G partition on a raid0 and it just flys. I would recommend doing that as soon as you can. Dont make it any bigger than 30-35 G. Windows just doesnt like that for some reason... of course your mileage will vary, but it is the same effect on all my boxes.

as for your page file.. put it on the partition at the front of the raid0 set. that is the fast part of the drives.

well i am not really sure what i got but its the onboard controller from a K8V SE Deluxe (asus) and they are running on master/slave settings, will this mess up the raid if i change them now? If anyone could show me in laymons terms on how to slipstream i would be in much thanks.
 
kewl... I have set this up before... Yes you should be able to change to cable select without problems... but as always when doing anything with drives.. make sure you have your important stuff backed up.

As for slipstreaming... two program that will help is nlite and xpcreate. Nlite may be all you need. It walks you through slipstreaming sp2 in addtion to removing parts of the install. if you want to add your raid drivers, then you want xpcreate. It is a little involved, however the website that has it has a great tutorial.

OMG thank you sooooo much dude, if you ever need any help on case modding let me know, i am decent at etching and pretty creative, shit if you ever do watercooling i will hook you up with a Bawls resivor (custom made by me ;-) )
 
My recomendation: Split the drives. Don't have both drives on the same cable. IDE can only complete 1 operation at a time per channel (read, write, seek). This is why SCSI outshines IDE in multiple request categories like Databases because each drive can queue up to 255 operations at once, per channel.
Spliting the drives onto the two ports of the RAID controller will help ensure you don't suffer from excess slack time from the bus design. Personal experiance I've seen as much as a 50% increase in performance after the drives were put on seperate cables Now mind you when I say increase I'm not talking about data rates, I'm talking about seek and access times..

doh!! looked right past that one. I totally agree.

make sure if you put these as cable select... pay attention to your cable and put the drives on the master connector.. (it will be the one farthest from the motherboard.
