So I'm trying to decide what I want to do for my mass storage in my computer my original idea was to just get a western digital black 2tb but I am thinking now I would rather do a raid 0 with 2 western digital red 1tb drives.. my boot drive is a 960 evo...

My question is tho is once I have the raid 0 setup is it possible to do a raid 1 with a 2tb western digital black for backup? I mean I could always just not do the raid 1 and just keep the 1tb drives installed and just use it for backup... just looking at opinions..

I have only ever done a raid one time with 2 drives and that was a raid 0 with 2 750gb drives years ago and that was fun... the drives actually outlasted the rest of the pc...

A really fancy controller or Windows/Linux might be able to set up a RAID 0+1 (4 drives) after setting up a RAID 0 (2 drives), yet I've never heard of a controller than can "break" standardized RAID requirements (RAID 0+1 requires 4 drives, same as RAID 10 which is better).

Take a look near the bottom to see the differences (and drive requirements) - http://www.icc-usa.com/raid-calculator.html

You could do an elaborate setup under Windows using VHDs, but your performance will be shit thanks to the write speed being limited to the 2TB drive (and even worse since it would be seeking back and forth to each VHD).

Just backup to the 2TB, it will be much easier, higher performance, and more reliable.
