Are all Radeon HD 5770 created equal? If not, what's the best version to pick up?

Running on ~ $125 - 150 budget, and this looks like a good option.
 
not all are created equal... most reference cards are similar enough, some might be factory overclocked, some might have better coolers, some might have a different design to cut costs.... or different specifications(see below)

xfx - double lifetime warranty
MSI hawk - good cooling
Sapphire VaporX - good cooling
Powercolor Eyefinity 5 - 5 miniDP ports for 5 monitors
Powercolor SingleSlot(announced and displayed, but not out yet)

if you dont mind, you can get good deals from used 5770 in the for-sale section... i got a powercolor eyefinity 5 from someone at $140(not bad when MSRP is 199)... saw other people selling xfx 5770s(the second lifetime warranty applies to the buyer) for around $125
 
The 5770 is an excellent value. But if you're shopping for one, be sure to buy a 1GB model. A couple companies have produced 512MB models, and they're pointless to buy.
 
I had my doubts about thsi cards power but recently played a friends box and I have to say I was impressed since he got his for ~135$ after Bing. Runs about as good as a GTX260 and cost less. Get one with a good cooler so you will have room to OC it your self. I wouldn't personally pay etc for a factory overclocked card when I can do it my self.
 
Thanks for the info. I saw a couple options on the Egg for 5770's around ~$140, seems the best price I can find without looking at used.
 
I JUST bought my 5770 and I can play anything including Metro2033 on my 20" 1680x1050 monitor. As long as your resolution isn't too high the 5770 is a real good dx11 bet.
 
If you are playing Bad Company 2 what kind of frame rates are you getting? What kind of processor?

I'm curious to know as well. I am currently running an 8800GTS 640mb and am considering upgrading. It can run BC2 perfectly smooth on medium (which doesn't bother me at all), but SC2 has been killing it in large battles. Although, I have not necessarily discerned whether it is my video card getting stomped or if it is my 2gb of ram/e6550.
 
What resolution? You can somewhat check this via taskmanager, check your cpu loads during large battles with the slowdowns. Alternatively lower you're graphics settings that are very gpu oriented (eg shadows) and see what happens as well.

I would stick with the name brands, the extra 10 to 20 bucks you save may not be worth it if you have to RMA the thing. (I ended up sending my 5870 in, no issues with XFX) Asus, XFX, and so on.

as for your price range there is nothing better. it even plays well on a 1080 or 1200 setup just. (it is better suited for smaller in high end games) I would go so far as to say its the single best consumer card on the market right now. (next in line would be the GTX460, not that Nvidia will make any money off it)
 
Playing at 1440x900. I have lowered pretty much every setting down a notch (most defaulted to High so I dropped them to Medium), but I cannot confirm if this fixed my issue or not because I have not played in another huge battle since. I assume it did not because the game still has awful load times on campaign missions, and there is always a good 5-10 second lag spike anytime I load up a new match.

Go for XFX if you can. That double-lifetime warranty is more than enough reason for you to spend a little bit of extra money on an XFX card. Asus and MSI are not too bad, either, but definitely go for an XFX if you can help it. I got my used XFX 5770 for $130 shipped from the FS/FT here. You shouldn't have much trouble finding one for under $150.

There are three heatsink designs for XFX 5770s: The Juniper XT (reference, brick-looking) cooler, the "egg/oval" cooler as well as a diamond/pylon-like shaped-cooler. Avoid the Juniper/reference cooler if you can, as it runs a bit hotter and louder than the other designs. I'm not exactly sure what other brands have as far as cooling goes, but I know there are some other cool designs out there that are also better than the Juniper.
 
I've got a pair of the XFX Radeon HD 5770 XXX overclocked cards for about $170 each. I tested each one individually before connecting them Crossfire-style, and they have worked well individually and together. I have the "brick" cooling option, and they run cool enough at 100% load and 40% fan speed, maybe 55-57C. It may matter more if you're going to add a card to a small case with sub-optimal airflow, so keep that in mind.

I'm going to agree with what everyone else is saying: stick with some of the top brands, the extra bit of money you spend is worth it for the security of having a real warranty and good customer service. My last XFX card had issues, and I spend a few days and more than a dozen emails with an XFX customer service rep trying to troubleshoot my card. Some places take a few days to even answer you, and that guy not only took care of me while I was complaining, but emailed me again a week later to ask me if the solution was still working.

I've had good experience with MSI and Asus as well.
 
I had 2 HIS 5770's in xfire for a couple months. They ran really well. I do kinda like HIS.

Juniper XT is not a bad design, but it's not as quiet nor as cool as the later designs.

One of the flaws about the egg/oval/pylon designs, however, is that they are open and not shrouded, so it'll spit hot air inside of your case. If you have good airflow then this shouldn't be a huge problem. As far as GPU temps go, Juniper XT does not run as cool as the other designs.

However, if the better design cost say $30+ more, I'd probably go with the Juniper XT. What kind of cooling the card has shouldn't be THAT much of a deciding factor in your purchase. Again, the XT is not a bad design by any means, but go with a newer one if you can help it.

yep.... backwards compatible, and a 5770 doesn't use enough bandwidth to be limited by 2.0

reference designs:
batman/mobile rectanglar cooler - v1, spits air out the back, but doesn't cool as well as the egg
egg cooler - v2, cools better but air remains in case... need to have enough air flow/case fan
