Radeon cooling change?

I'm using an ATI Raeon x800xt that likes to run hot and over heat on high out put graphics games like Oblivian. I've set the graphics to medium instead of the high the game saids I can run it at with this card. I've also used the ATI tool to under clock it, and have the fan run 100% full time. These changes have made the time between lock ups longer, but it hasn't completely solved the over all heating prob. I'm looking at upgrading to a new vid card in a few months and don't want to spend anything for better cooling for this one. However, I do have a few cpu heat sink and fans for the older Pentium 3's and Athlon 64's (939). All of them seem to have a lot more surface area and higher cfm fans. Would it be a bad idea to use one of them instead of the stock cooling that came on the card? I'm not worried about the "it won't fit", sure it will, it's just a matter of how. My question is will it work better??

Also, does the screen refresh rate setting have any thing to do with how hot it will run? Or does changing the hertz have nothing to do at all with the temp of the gpu?
 
Have you cleaned the card lately? My old 850XTPE use to run hot when it was full of dust.
 
Yes I have, that was one of the first things I did. I have also made sure keep all wires away from the expantion card area for good air flow from the side fan.
 
No harm in trying, the stock coolers were pretty junky, but they shouldn't have caused overheating problems.
