Radeon 9800pro Temperatures

I have an 9800pro and i was wondering:

1) what program would be best to monitor temps of this card.
2) what temps are good for these cards, in case i wanted to o'c
 
As far as I know, I think only the 9800XT, x800 series have a temperature sensor.
 
i have a temperature LCD on the front of my case and i took the sensor and put it in the heatsink to monitor the temps. i Just want to make sure. Still need answers for these though.
 
I have a thermal probe that came with a multimeter I got. When I touched it to the stock crappy heatsink, it read somewhere around 60C (from what I can remember). This diode measured correct body temps under my tongue, so that was accurate enough for me.

I got water now, and it runs 6C over case temp (30C). I didn't dare overclock the card with the stock cooler! Now, I get 450/380 rock solid with not much temperature increase. I love water! :D
 
yea i want water :p. But i still dont know what good temps are for this card. Becuase i was told i can o'c this card to XT speeds from the owner. But i want to make sure my temps are ok.
 
I'm pretty sure that ATI gave these cards the crappy cooling to keep you from overclocking. I could very well be wrong, but that's what makes sense to me.

I didn't oc with the stock cooler because I didn't want to see where the thermal breakdown point was for this chip. The last thing I wanted to do was kill a brand new piece of hardware.

Being a hawt chip to start with, I'd say stock temps are too hawt. That's just my opinion though. You may have trouble getting the card to XT speeds without artifacts, and still have a card that will last a long time.
 
well, this card has iceberg VGA cooler. Plus i think its 8 ocz ramsinks for the card. So it doesnt have crappy cooling. But right this second my temperature on my front of my case which is reading from the heatsink of the 9800pro is reading 120F/48.8C. But it gets at least 125F when using my computer moderately. and thats just on the heatsink. Thats why im wondering what the good/safe/danger temps are. Please let me know what they are

Nah, they were just cheap. Crap cooling costs some tiny bit less in manufacturing costs (it adds up when you produce a lot of cards.) I swear that I think the 9600 was more a technology demo than anything else, but it did too well. It was meant to show off their new methods that make faster cooler chips IMO. They then took the same technology, decreased the pipeline bottlenecks, and gave it better performance overall with the next cards out.

Anyway, who cares about temperatures. Your card will tell you when it's too hot itself. Play games or run ATI tool with the artifact tester. If you get artifacts, it's too much. Alternately, it will just spontaneously reboot your computer if you push it too hard. But, don't worry too much. The 9600 can take some serious abuse. It was MADE to run cool. Heck, you can get some small amount of ocing even with the stock crap without cooking it. And the memory goes up to 320 or so safely without cooling added. I have heatsinks on the memory and I can't get higher than 330 to stay stable. I don't have water cooling either, but I got the core stable up to 480 or so. I was told that really at this point I need to voltmod this thing to get more out of it, but I'm not about to start soldering to this card and risk destroying it.

EDIT: Oh, and the 9800 people talk about temperatures like 72C as being basically normal for a video card. This thing should run cooler than a 9800 equally oced.
 
ight thanks nazo. Now can somone tell me what artifacts are. I have never seen them nor have dealt with them. Reminder my old grafics card was a geforce 5200 fx. :eek:.

edit: also ive noticed that when im playing counter strike, somtimes certain parts of the grafics like the walls in certain areas turn tottally black. In one case ive had the entire B site in dust 2 turn totally black. I couldnt see a damn thing. whats this about.
 
That glitch COULD be memory errors. However, there's another good possibility. By counter strike, you mean the Half-Life mod? Modern video card drivers have severe issues with older games I've noticed. You should see how Freespace looks on my video card... What I'd suggest is that for the games that support glide from back then, find a GOOD wrapper (try several, eventually one that works well will turn up.) Since those basically emulate the old functionality, they avoid all those pesky issues.

As for artifacts, those are basically any kind of video curruption caused by too much heat/overclocking. The GPU is the most easily recognizable as you will see a sort of snow effect with random pixels. Memory can have different effects ranging from screwing with the actual shape of the area to screwing up textures. It kind of depends.

You don't have to recognize them yourself though. Just run ATI tool with it's artifact test option. It can automatically detect artifacts and let you know. Probably it's a good idea to run something like rthdrbl first, then switch to ati tool and look for artifacts.
 
i have 9800xt, temps range from 70°C idle & 80°C during gaming. AFAIK no artifacts.
