im trying to install the video card drivers on my friends newly built pc (runnign 98). when i go to the ati installer, after i select the type of installation i get this message:

setup was unable to complete the installation. Try to setup your display adapter with a standard VGA driver before running setup

ive tried running it from the onboard video but get nothing, even after i cleared the bios. whats wrong?

I take it that you installed the Radeon, booted into the Bios and then disabled onboard video, disabled video shadowing and video cache, set the agp size to 128, turned off BIOS shadowing, reserved a vga IRQ and set video boot priority (init) to agp first, right?

what i did was put the computer together from scratch. i plugged the monitor into the radeon 9800, and booted. first i used boot and nuke on the hdd, then installed msdos 7.1, then installed win 98. when i installed it and was loading it wheere it detects the drivers and stuff, it detected the onlboard video (up until this point i didnt even know i had onboard because im too stupid to look lol) and installed them. that was the point all of the trouble started happening. when i tried to install the radeon 9800 drivers, i got that error message. so i shut it off, cleared the bios, and tried to start it from the onboard. the onboard had no video. the only way to get the onboard to work is to take out the 9800, and use the onboard then. so i tried again with the 9800 pro, and i got into the driver setup, except about midway through it cant find files, one was dat3.sumthing and the other wasnt specified. sorry for the long post.

nevermind it magically fixed itself when i downloaded the catalyst drivers from the website and used them as a reference for drivers. maybe something was wrong with the cd?

The real question is why is your 'friend' still running 98 with a 9800 pro?

its because he was supposed to get xp for the computer im building for him, but the guy he was getting it from wont have it for a few months or sumthing. so he at least has something, i installed windows 98 so he can at least use the pc until he gets xp.
