Rack cases?

Alright, I'm building 2 system and thinking about going with RACK cases or whatever they are called.

Both will be dual procs, both standard ATX mother boards. One will be PIIIs other will be AMD MPs with huge heat sinks/80m double wide fans... so both cases will have to have a lot of head room (don't think either would fit into a U1?).

Also, going to have to put a "standard" PSU in each (need atleast 500+ watts on the AMD, not sure about the intel one). Will I have to go with 2Us or 3s?

Any ideas? I want something that looks good, but not to expensive. I've never bought rack mount cases before. Suggestions?

For a "regular" PSU you will need a 4u at least. Antec makes a good one.

Not true at all, in fact quite a few 2U's take regular ATX's, however, if you want to use more than 3 cards (video or other) you would be better off with a 3U or 4U.

Going with the "huge heatsinks" you are probably needing a 3 or 4U, with the 4U being easier to find.

if cost is any issue your probably going to be best with 4U cases

Hi,

I bought a Compucase (HEC) S411 4U rackmount case a couple of weeks ago and have so far been really pleased with it (Link top specs, .PDF). I paid something like 140 euros for it without a PSU.

Antec sells the exact same case with 400W SmartPower PSU as 4U22ATX400 and as 4U22ATX550EPS with the 550W Truepower PSU. Don´t know about the prices but the case itself is very cost-effective and a pleasure to work with.

That same case is also sold under various other brands.

The only thing to nag about was that when I installed a Supermicro CSE-M35 5 bay SATA hotswap enclosure I had to take out the frontpanel dustfilter and it´s cage, the hotswap bay protruded out a little bit too much (~8-10mm?) and I couldn´t close the frontpanel. Of course I could have bent the cage that holds the filter in place but decided that it really wasn´t worth it as I wanted to keep everything as stock and tiptop as possible.

All in all, I think I´m going to buy another one when I get the dough to upgrade and buy a new computer sometimes later this year (waiting for Nforce4/939/PCIe etc.)

Horna

as a note

I picked up a RMC4L-4U w\ 300Watt Hot Swap PSU for $147
and a SUPERMICRO SC822I-300LP 2U Server Case w\ an Ablecom 300Watt for $92
(not that I'll be using that first PSU, Ablecoms are OK for the board I plan)

both where new in factory containers with full hardware
and the Supermicro shipped with rails

but you need to really be careful to match up exactly the models that are listed, and sometimes that takes quite a few search queries, I have tracked a given basic model listed and thought damn thats nice only to find out when finally matching the full version listed it a stripped down edition of the basic model

also carefully read the terms at dumpinggoods, especially on any refurbs
I picked up a Pinnacle Pro One RTDV capture card, but I had to get the return period extended twice inorder to test it (it failed) I got the RMA and while it took a little while to get credited, they where real nice throughout the process, but employ due diligence with the terms of the sales, the complaints at resellerratings (6.97) are larely over the failure to understand and abide by the terms, I gather these guys specialize in open box and returned items from other retailers (that card was certainly opened, even had the serial number to the software written on the manual) so you need to take that into considerati0on, great deals, but certain risks and you need to pay attention and keep up your end of the bargain, all in all they where very fair with me and Im a happy customer.

true if its a standard ATX board and the PSU is located at the back
it will be upended, on its "side" which will take all but a 1\2 inch of a 4U

for some great rackmount case deals
http://www.dumpinggoods.com/dumpinggoods/items.asp?CartId=5760463BBKV-ACCWARE-O575&Cc=SERVERC&tpc=
what is available is always changing and you have to research what it is that is listed
little to no details
nice link Ice Czar

are those guys reliable there?... and how are those stuff so cheap?

hows the shipping on their products

well check resellerratings, youll see my review
and where the complainers got tripped up too :p

if your getting refurb electronics read the terms, keep in touch
I found them easy to work with, as far as the cases went, they shipped a little late
but without issue

I gather from their name and website they specialize in openbox, return and overstock lots
and when it comes to cases, well I didnt see one complaint about that, just rave reviews
but if your getting a refurb mobo, well there might be a cable or 2 missing, or you might need to download the drivers and manual cause they are missing, and youll have to pay shipping for RMAs, there is a limited anount of time for you to determine if the part is good, so if you snooze, you could easily lose.

I assume the "new" items are overstocks or dated stock,
likely supplemented with wherever they can get deals on from a manufacturer

when I ordered the capture card, I called them and said, well if the software is missing it just a fancy wall decoration, and they said no problem, I pointed out that I had ordered on X and that I had till Y to test it according to the terms, and that if it wasnt here tommorow Id have to RMA, they said no it starts when you get it, I got it and tested in 3 different computers with 2 different analog VCR without getting it to work (didnt have DV) had the period extended so I could try the last, then RMAd it, even with the hit on shipping it was still well worth it, those are bloody expensive cases retail (the rails alone are $40 for that Supermicro) I would have been ecstatic had the card worked out, as it was
it was still a good deal ;)

Practice due diligence and you should have no problem, but read those terms,
it aint newegg

That's a great site, but they ussually only have 1 in stock for each model... I would like to get atleast 2 that look the same. Any other good sites out there? I don't mind buying new, but the cheaper the better :)

well, that varies alot, in the rackmounts I gather they come an go quite quickly
and that they are all returns\openboxes
being there is only the "Blowout" section for rackmount cases

so if your really bargin hunting, you wait for 2 or get one that is popular then get the 2nd
I picked up that Supermicro to match another I already had

there are lots of other sites, but they are full pop retail, and youll likely find them while hunting down the models (use Froogle), but damn they put a dent in the pocket

Good Luck ;)
