R600 300Watts Beast !

With the G70 chip, G71 especially, NVIDIA showed us that they cared about power consumption.
ATI on the other hand, is increasing their card's power consumption, since R520. They reduced it a little bit with the X1950 XTX, but neverthelesss, power consumption @ load is insane as it is. I mean, a single X1900 XTX draws ~40W less than a 7900 GTX SLI setup...!!
I really hope these 300W rumors for just the card, are not true.
I don't think power was the main concern with the G71....they were more interested in cost savings.

Performance and profits first, performance/watt second. The reduced transistor counts (~10%) has a direct link to dice per wafer, and thus yield. Higher yields means higher margins. Majority of power savings came from the 110-90nm process shift.

Well, of course their main concern is profit and cost savings. I've said so myself in other threads. ATI and NVIDIA are in it for the money. Period!
But they, as hardware engineers, know that by reducing the amount of transistors, would also reduce the power consumption and heat produced. So it only brings advantages.
Fact is, NVIDIA has shown that they do care about this, not only because it is cheaper, but also because it's more efficient and I had hoped ATI would follow the same path, but if this rumor holds true, I guess they really didn't care about that issue with their cards.

Prescott?

oh yeah lol...

well aside from that, generally speaking die shirnks cause less power, when the research is put in they always find a way to reduce power consumption. The problem with prescott was, that research wasnt there. it was like the emergancy edition.

and as for the people still argueing about 6800 and X800: you probibly know more about this generation then i do because i skipped it, but i have worked with a few, and i gotta tell you that it was a whole lot nicer working with the X800s then the 6800s. The Ultra cards were hot as hell, and the GTs were insanly unstable upon release.
