I'm trying to set up a rudimentary server at home and salvaged a PSU from a friend.

It's an AM2 board, and requires a 4 pin connector on the motherboard, but the PSU doesn't seem to have it. Is this normal, and how do I work around this?

Thanks in advance.

The four pin connector is used to supply power to the CPU voltage regulators. It was introduced with the pentium 4 and the athlon XP and coincided with the switch to running the CPU voltage regulator from 12V.

You can get adaptors to go from a "molex" connector to the 4 pin CPU power connector but if your PSU doesn't have a 4 pin CPU power connector then it's quite likely that it doesn't have the 12V capacity to run a more modern rig.

Does it have an 8-pin CPU power connector? If so, that can be used instead.

If that PSU doesn't have a 4 pin connector then that's not normal. it may have an 8 pin connector that you can split or plug into the 4 pin port.
