Hi - sorry if this question has been asked a billion times before - but what is the quietest fan out there? I've used some stealths before and they were pretty close to silent. Are there any others out there? I'm looking to replace a 60mm delta that's sitting on my Thermalright SK6 right now. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Well if you just want THE quietest fan, I'm not really sure.

For 92/80mm fans, a lot of people recommend Panaflo's. I was going to get one, but Enermax has one with a higher CFM rating and lower dBA. The one I got has 65CFM @ 34 dBA. It's I can't hear it unless it's the only fan on.

so panaflos are better than stealths?

Oh and whatever happened to those fans that had the motors mounted on their outside so that there was hardly anything blocking air flow in the middle? Weren't those supposed to be rather quiet?

You're talking about Tip-Magnetic Driving fans, or TMD fans.

Y.S. Tech makes one, here are the specs.
Dimension - 74x74x15mm
Current - 0.295A
Speed - 5600RPM
Air Flow - 36CFM
Noise - 38dBA

Not quiet at all, and the airflow isn't that great. I also heard vibration was a problem on the Aeroflow (It comes with a TMD fan).

There's also a 4500RPM version. Doesn't seem much better.

Dimension - 74x74x15mm
Current - 0.17A
Speed - 4500RPM
Air Flow - 30CFM
Noise - 33dBA

That 60 looks quite nice. Too bad it costs double what most fans cost  Though I guess I can handle that. And I'm sure my ears will thank me.

Would there be a large difference between that and this Stealth 60: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=11-999-601&depa=0

Air Flow 12 CFM
Noise 20 dBA

compared to the Papst which costs 3 times more:
Noise 16.0 dB(A)
Flow 12.4 CFM

Edit: copied wrong specs

i dont have any personal experience.. but i'm planning on buying some soon.. but i've heard alot about silenx fans.. www.silenx.com .. they have a 9db fan similar to that papst but it pushes more air at the same noise level and is half the price.. they have the best lookin specs i've seen on paper.. and i've heard they're better than both papst and panaflo.. like i said i dont have any personal experience but i'm sure a lot of peopel here do that can give ya some input

Panaflo Low 60mm push 12cfm
Panaflo Medium 60mm push 16 cfm
Panaflo High 60mm push 19cfm

I would go with the medium for best cfm/noise ratio

Oh you're right. http://www.silenx.com/productcart/pc/configurePrdz.asp?idcategory=3&idproduct=82:

Air Flow: 18 CFM
Noise Level: 16 dBA

Has anyone ever used these fans? They look pretty sweet.

Any idea where to find a place that has these? I looked around and couldn't find a single store that had them - which makes it rather hard to compare their specs!

The 70mm YS-Tech TMD fan is the best silent fan. Cools EXTREMELY well while whisper quiet. Kept my 2400+ at 34C idle and 41C load.

You are kidding right? I put 2 of those in my case and they sounded like a fucking jet turbine when they start up until full speed where they settle into hair dryer mode.

I swear, I could come home, get 2 rooms and a hall away and could tell if my PC was running or had shut down.

Hell no!

I dont feel like barging in but I also dont feel like I should bring this topic to a new thread.

I was wondering what is the quietest 120mm fan? It will be going on my radiator, I bought a DD WC system the other day and I got 2 evercool 120mm fans with it. Will these be quiet? My radiator fits two 120mm's. I heard titans are super quiet but they only have the mobo input...the 3 pin right?

How much air is a good amount to be pushed? What's a good all around 120mm? I want my radiator cooled pretty well:)

I see that papst here.. seems to be the quietest on the list but is that a small ammount of air being moved?

What you want is this one
http://directron.com/4412fgl.html
on a rheostat.

I am not sure about the other papst fan you posted.

For the picky, there are two types of papst fans I am talking about. Supposedly both of them have sleeve bearings. The ball bearing ones, I won't even consider because all low speed ball bearing fans make a weird whining noise (vantec stealth, coolermaster) from my personal experience.
Ok, on the sleeve bearing fans, papst has one that has a central hub with some metal slivers along the outer edge of the fan hub. This is supposed to balance the fan and help keep noise down. However, I found that they seem to make a similar whine like ultra slow speed ball bearing fans. Papst website however lists them as sleeve bearing fans, eventhough I believe they are not due to how they sound. Another thing I've noticed is that ball bearing fans seem to strongly "click" into predefined places when you use your hand to spin them, while on sleeve bearing fans, this is less pronounced.

The link I gave you is the one that I believe is a true sleeve bearing fan, and if you slow it down some more, it will not have the whine I was talking about above. It also spins like a sleeve bearing fan because it doesn't seem to strongly "click" into predefined places. What they did on this fan is shave down some of the fan blades to balance the fan instead. On the central hub, there is no hole to fit the metal balancing strips.

I know on the directron site, the 80mm papst fan 8412ngle is the wrong type of 80mm fan you want from them. The right model number should be 8412ngl.

I can't think of any better way to explain this, but I am speaking from personal experience with these fans, and really, the good papst fans, I think they push the best air for the least amount of noise. I have not tried the silenx fans, but the specs look good that I might try them sometime. I gave the vantec stealth fans a whirl and I hated them because they were just crap.

Heh, Rix I live not to far away from you (syracuse). Central New York powa~

Thx for all the info Rix, you've been a big help.

BTW I guess both of us all live near eachother (Rochester) w00t:D

Will you stop recommending that fan? It's not even mediocre. Any panaflo/papst will be better than that. Plus, who the hell uses a 70mm fan?

For the 3 pins connector, don't worry, you can find 3 to 4 pins adaptors. Like this one for example.

hehe nice infinity, i thought scottsville sounded somewhat familiar. Although back on topic, my panaflo 80mm fan came with a female 2 pin molex on the end, anyway i can switch it up so i can use a 3 pin molex on it?
