Just need some quick advice. I apologize for asking a newb question but I am 100% out of the loop as far as ATI cards go as I have always owned nvidia, and I just dont have the energy to spend a week reading gpu reviews. :p

Im getting a S27A950D next week, and if I want to enjoy native 3d gaming, im gonna need to get an ATI card. Im looking to spend ~$200ish. My only requirements are that it supports the sammy 3d + hopefully bluray and is a decent bit faster than my 8800GTS 512. Would like it to be able to play a game like crysis 2 in 3d for example, but im not a serious gamer, 30-40 fps is fine and I don't need the settings totally maxed out.

Anyone care to give me a good starting point?

Does NVIDIA not support 3D screens? Or do they only support their own crap. The reason is that NVIDIA's stereoscopic drivers have far superior game support than ATI (who rely on 3rd party plugins).

Direct3D games work fine on ATI, but so far they refuse to allow OpenGL games to work (ie RAGE, Quake, Doom, Dark Athena, + some others). NVIDIA supports OpenGL games.

Any recent ATI card will destroy an 8800GTS unless you go for the low end cards.

Keep in mind 3D requires at least double the frame rate of non-3D to get similar experience. I haven't tried 3D but I would hate to turn vsync off.

Crysis 2 in Direct3D 9 mode at medium is not very taxing. My 5850 can get 40ish FPS at high in 1080p so I would think a 6870 *might* be able to do it at medium/low, a 6950 should be able to do it at medium/high.

Too bad you can't run two cards with one doing left and the other doing right.

I can't help you with prices as I don't have a clue about the US market.
 
All ATI cards with UVD 3 support Bluray 3D hardware decode.

That means any 6xxx card (which is all you can buy new anyway).

Your CPU would likely be able to handle Bluray 3D without hardware decoding anyway.

Of course you will need the Ultra/Extreme/Expensive edition of the latest version of Bluray playback software. The stuff that comes with a Bluray drive likely has 3D disabled.
 
Thanks! That gives me a starting point at least. And yea, nvidia only supports 3d on "Nvidia 3D Vision" monitors, and the samsung isnt one. Samsung does their own thing thing with the 3d cause its supposed to be brighter, so only ATI supports it.
