I'm researching DC farms. I want to build one, primarily for F@H, maybe a little SETI too. I'm going to hook the boxes up to a KVM so I can control them without the mess of multiple monitors and keyboards, but what I'm looking for is a way to display the consoles from all the machines on the monitor without cycling through them with the KVM.

I tried out EMIII on my main computer and lost two WUs. I'm not certain that said app caused the problems, but I immidiately stopped using it and havn't lost a WU since.

Any suggestions/advice will be appriciated.

emIII dosent do anything with folding other than look at what is going on.

If you say you lost 2 work units, I would investigate more into where they went, chat with some of the mods at the official stanford forums, if you have log info on what was lost.

I have yet to hear of emIII causing work to be lost.


 
I can't really think of a way to display the actual console, nor do I ever look at it anyways.

As above, EM3 is not going to affect folding.

Honestly you don't need a KVM either. Depending on the OS (XP/Nix) all have either built in remote control ability or 3rd part remote control software packages (free=VNC). Once you get use to working w/o a KVM life is almost easier.

Also, share a folder on the node the client is in and check the log every now and again if you really wanted to.
 
VNC is most certainly one of the best things you could look into. Makes remote admining a dream and you could potentially completely eliminate the need for a kvm and go completely headless, just have a CAT5 and power cord to each box.
 
I third VNC or remote desktop.... much easier to set up and much nicer to look at....

Finally, a freaking mod gets something right around here...

I'm kidding.

It's different cutting the cord to so speak, going with out a monitor/kvm. Only think you can't actually do is work in the BIOS, make sure this is right before stowing the box someplace. Power after power loss = on/last state. Don't halt on errors (no keyboard) are the big BIOS settings.

I've got 2x benches here with an 8 point KVM on each bench. In the back I've got ~ 50 headless computers. I get more confused working on the KVM, forgetting which box I'm on than I do working on the stack w/o monitors. Plus, I'm really lazy. Clicking eaiser than reaching over and pushing a button. :p

When in doubt, you can drag a tube over to the box/pull the box and place on monitor is really needed.

I hate VNC. It's free yea, just don't like the feel for me. If using XP Pro, use remote desktop. If using Nix, use XP Pro... :) j/k

Well, I suppose it wasn't EMIII. I just assumed it was, those were the only WUs I've ever lost, before or since using it. I'm going to try it out again.

I'm probably not going to spend big bucks on a KVM, I'm just going to pick one up on ebay cheap. I'm still going to look into what you guys mentioned.

Also, I'm definitely going to run Linux. Linux is free, when you're building computers in the $300 to $500 range, the $160 for XP really hurts. I won't even get into the stability advantages of Linux. I've got some discs of Ubuntun and Kubuntu headed my way, I'll see if I lean towards Gnome or KDE.

There is Foldix from Mage...i dont know where it is...but i know someone else does
 
I use unhappy_mage's Foldix on several computers. I like it for dedicated folding computers because of the easy install, easy to control on a network using ssh (as far as i know , you gotta have a linux box available with keyboard & video to use ssh) , or you can use putty from a windows box, it will automagically appear on a windows network to view with EMIII like I do. It works excellently on older hardware & u_mage is currently looking into an update for newer hardware. So far I've only run into one hardware combination that wouldn't handle the current version.

WUs fail from time to time.... for many different reasons..... whether it be an instability from an OC, failing memory, heat, etc.... and sometimes, the WUs themselves are the culprit...

Many of us use EMIII to monitor our boxen, in fact, the developer drops in every now and then to tell us about an update/etc.... I think he still has a box or two folding for the [H]orde...

Do you still have the log files from the failed WUs? Maybe we can help you figure out what happened...

Just make SURE your motherboard choice will run without a video card installed or monitor plugged in. A very few will, but most I've run across won't.
 
Yeah, that is one reason I'd like to have at least one cluster of machines, the ones that have video cards, running through a KVM.

That shouldn't cause any problems should it?
