I've been folding now for a good week and decided to create a passkey for my account. Adding passkeys to the GPU clients was easy but the SMP client does not allow me to enter the code once the client has been configured. I might answer my own question here but I just want to make sure the method I took was correct.

I found a file within the SMP client directory name client.cfg. I opened the file with notepad and added my passkey here. Was this the correct method or should I uninstall/reinstall the SMP client to add my passkey?

My last question is will the passkey take immediately and should I restart all my clients now that I have added a passkey for my account?
 
I have no idea whether what you did was the correct way to do it or not, but you said it wouldn't allow you to put your pass key in? When you type into the command line

folding@home-win32-x86.exe -configonly

It should take you through the configuration process again, and you should be able to type it in whem prompted during the config process again.

If you have entered your passkey, it should take effect with the next work unit your client takes hold of. I would just let it finish what it is working on now. You will also need to fold 10 advanced A3 work units before it will start giving you bonus points as well.
 
I rename the EXE fah6.exe and move the dir to c:\, but that is just me.

but running it with the -configonly tag will let you set the thing up just as if it where brand new (with your old answers and default)
 
I read someplace that the configuration file has binary data in it, so you shouldn't use notepad to edit it.

As the others mentioned, use the -configonly flag and you should be good to go.
 
I'm going to take a gamble with my config edit for one WU and see what happens. When I ran the -configonly option my passkey was already there so I'm going to assume it took the key fine just by editing the config file with notepad. I suppose if there are any issues I could just delete the config file and start setup from scratch again. Thanks for all the info, I'll make sure to keep the -configonly / moving files options for future use.
 
That does work, and is a nice little trick for rolling out the FAH client to multiple PC's. Just copy the client.cfg file to your new PC in your FAH folder and it saves you having to type in your passkey.
 
A quick question about passkeys since we're on the subject. I'm going to be setting one up myself. I've got a mix of older P4 based hardware and newer machines running a mix of command line, gpu, and standard systray clients. If I set up my machines here at work with passkeys right now I will still get credit for any work units that complete at home in the meantime till I enter passkey information there, yes?

Ive only been folding for about a week so this is all new (again) to me. I'd folded about 5 years ago but things have changed quite a bit since then. GPU folding on my video card though seems to be severe win though.

You need a passkey to get bonus credit on the SMP clients. You want to run the smp client on just about any good dual core or above.

Also make sure you have written permition from the owner of those boxen at work if you don't own your own business.
 
Ive got verbal permission from I.T. And I know about the bonus points. But what I want to know is will it effect the units that do not have a passkeys that are currently running? Or should I wait till I have everything halted on all machines and then set them up with passkeys one at a time?
 
The only WU that are affected by a passkey are SMP. The other clients are indifferent, it doesn't matter.
Now if you are running a SMP client without a passkey you will get credit for the WU, but not the bonus (and that is a good chunk of the ppd you will get from them)
The only clients I bother typing in my passkey on are SMP.
