I have a 3800+ X2 form AMD and wanted to know.... I was tinkering with the frequency clock and multipliers the other night and seem to have found a really sweet mix. Im at 2.15Ghz and 10X multi, at 1.41V per software readings. What I wanna know is this. When at a stock clock (2.0x10@1.35V) I was getting 44C Idle and 50C load. Now my idle is like 40-41C and load is like 50-51C.....Common sense says it will heat up with OC, but mine cooled down a degree C or 2......waas up with that???

Im air cooled by the way with a stock XP-120 and a Thermaltake Thunderblade, since that factors in as well....

Thanks in advance for the explanations

Your heatsink must have gotten seated better or the thermal paste was better applied....at 1.4v you should be getting WAY more than 2.15ghz, my X2 3800 is running 2.6ghz at 1.45v. Using my Thermaltake BigTyphoon heatpipe, I only get 49c to 50c MAX temps in a hot room......

...or if you don't want to go any further, you could drop the voltage down a bit, possibly even under 1.35v with such a (IMHO) modest overclock which would likely drop temps further. I agree that the thermal paste must have settled, but also remember that motherboard temperature reading isn't perfect. Upping the voltage could have alternatively affected something else on the motherboard (also bios variations could affect this), thus altering temperature readout. Full load temp is what really matters anyway, just keep it under 60ish and you should be fine, everyone has their opinions on safe temps of course.

agreed, it had to have settled, but I dunno much about that though......

I think I will try the voltage drop and see what the temps do. Will dropping voltage cause the CPU to slow down (downclock), or does that not work that way??? I wanna get a clock speed that will be decently cool (within the 50-55C under load) range with good speed, and wont burn out quickly due to component stressing..... Make sense???

For some reason when I go to 2.3Ghz or higher, the compy freezes.....no I/O no nothing....Any suggestions there, maybe voltage issue???

Very likely you have not lowered the htt multi from 5, thus your limit, and/or you have not set a memory divider so you are also overclocking your ram more than it can go. Read up eclipse's oc guide stickied at the top of the overclocking & cooling forum to make sure you've made all the changes you need to. As far as over stressing, keep the volts under 1.5 and you'll have nothing to worry about. When you finally figure you have settled on a nice overclock, run 2 instances of prime95 small ftt stress test, manually setting each one's affiny to different cores to test stability for at least 8 hours, I suggest 12 or more. If all is well, you can either stop, or 1)try an even higher overclock or 2) try lowering the volts while maintaining the speed and keep it stable.
*edit* the sticky be gone, hmm... try http://eclipseoc.com/index.php?id=6,9,0,0,1,0

Are you using arctic silver?

The extra heat may have liquified the paste more, increasing it's thermal ability.
