Hi,

I need help getting some data off my hard drive. Its a 120GB and its in an external enclosure. It has both usb and firewire, but i need to use the firewire to access the drive. I hooked everything up right, and device manager detects it, and all the controllers are enabled in the bios, but I cant see the drive in my computer, how do I access it?
 
So you're saying the drive is shown in the Device Manager but not in My Computer?
 
where did it come from?
is it a dynamic disk? or basic?
you have rescanned disks in Disk Manager?
 
where did the enclosure come from? I dont know, its generic i believe, its just a cheapy thign i picked up, but it worked fine on usb, i dont know what it means to be a dynamic disk.. and yea, i recanned in disk manager

So you plug it in with USB and you can move info on and off, but it doesn't work with firewire?
 
so where did the HDD come from?
what OS? from the same install your currently trying to access it from?
what kind of partition did it have? Primary?
is it NTFS? there can be permissions involved
 
the hard drive used to be in my comp as a main drive, a while back, but it was collecting dust, so i formatted it through ide to NTFS using windows xp, and then i put it in the enclosure. It only has 1 partition, so primary. Everything is being done on windows xp pro.

Make sure your firewire controller has the most updated drivers.

Try a different firewire cable.
Try the enclosure on another computer with firewire.
Try the hard drive in another enclosure.
 
alright, it shows up as a Texas instruements ieee controller, but still no drive. The drive has 2 firewire ports on it, does it matter which one I use?
 
It doesn't matter which firewire port you use. The second port is used for daisy-chaining firewire devices.

I'd try what I listed a couple posts ago and try both firewire ports on the card and enclosure.
 
I tried both on the drive, but there is only one on my board. I have an IC7-max3. I'm assuming the firewire drivers were eitehr in windows, or in the 4in1 chipset drivers, becaues i cant find them on abit's website. So yea, I'll keep trying, thanks alot everyone for the help, keep it coming
 
well there is always simplifing the problem
hook it up as ATA internally
 
as far as I know, it worked that way, and I did find my usb cable, and it works just fine using it, but the firewire still wont work.. I know the drive works however. Are there any drivers outside the ones in windows or no?
 
Windows uses included firewire drivers.

Sounds like either the firewire controller/ports on the enclosure are busted, or the firewire port on the motherboard is busted.

Try finding another firewire device to test on the motherboard.

unless you havent already tried a new cable as Xrave pointed out a few posts up

cross parting is always very enlightening
if those succeed (cable \ mobo port),
pull the drive and hook it up directly again to verify the HDD
which would reduce it to the external enclosure bridgecard
and an RMA
