Questions with connecting via DVI

Ok im trying to connect my monitor to my computer for with DVI
Im running a ATI x300 video card and a ViewSonic N3250w Widescreen TV.
I purchased a DVI to HDMI cable and hooked it up, but when i open my control center itdoes show anything for digital displays or when i switch imput to hdmi i dont get a desktop. Any ideas?

hit like refresh or find monitors or something like that. Or change it to LCD mode or something like that. Im not sure how I did mine but I did something along the lines in the ATI Control Panel by switching it from CRT to LCD and digital and it worked for me.
