I have a 4200+ X2 with an BFG 9800 GT and an open PCI-e slot. I also have an 8800GTS KO Sitting in its box.

Whats the best method for getting the most PPU out of these options? *currently only running a single GPU fold instance* I am running Windows7 If that changes anything

(IMO) :)
-Run the SMP MPICH client on the X2
-Run 2 instances of the GPU2 client (1 for each gpu) if you have enough psu power to push both cards and the 2nd PCIe slot is a 4x or greater

Follow Xilikon's [H]orde guides if you need help (kinda tricky getting the SMP client set up). Be sure to use the recommended flags (-smp for the cpu client, -forcegpu nvidia_g80 for the gpu's, -verbosity 9 if you want on all).

On a dual core here, SMP + 2 GPUs was always a headache to manage, without something losing some CPU time and slowing down, but it's been awhile since I last tried. That's why I recommended 2 GPUs + 1 CPU. It's worth trying zero2dash's suggestion though. You definitely want to get both GPUs running.
 
I would agree with Tobit, the headache has always been there for me in the same situation. the GPU Client x2 is a must, running a simple or "classic" Windows CPU client on one core is easy to set up and takes little keep up on.
 
Windows SMP is kind of a pain, and the classic client is pretty low output. Unless you only want to run f@h , which is understandable, I would use the CPU for WCG + BOINC. The [H]orde has a team for that too and you'll still be donating CPU cycles to worthy causes.

I do something similar. On my GPU box, I run OGR-27 on the spare CPU cycles. :cool:
 
I want to slowly ease back into this, two gpu's and a single cpu will be a nice easy trial run for the moment.

edit: that was quick, GPU temps are far to high, must seek alternative cooling methods

Do you have your fans turned up? These cards seem to err on the side of low fan and high temps unless you set them manually. It's almost as if they designed them for intermittent use rather than 24/7 for years. Silly card builders. I run my 4890s at about 40-45% fan speed and they are noisy but they usually keep temps below 70C

It didn't help that the only way they both fit is if i cram the 8800gts up against the backside of the 9800, thus no airflow. The 9800 is a single slot and the 8800 is a dual slot monster.

I wholly disagree.
Follow the guide, it takes no more than 10 minutes to install and use the SMP MPICH client.
Sure, if you're under Vista or Win7, you have to do some elevated privilege stuff (running cmd prompt as admin), but it's still pretty easy.

In order in sig, I run
CPU SMP MPICH + GPU2
CPU SMP MPICH + GPU2
CPU SMP MPICH
(console clients on all)

No performance hit on the CPU+GPU client systems at all for me. :)
