Questions about RAID 1

I'm switching my from (1) WD 250GB ATA-100 drive to (2) WD 200GB SATA drives in RAID 1, and I have a few questions.

1) After I setup the RAID array, say I decide I just want to run the drives by themselves, can I do this without formatting them?

2) Say for whatever reason, I was running them by themselves, and I had 10GB of data on one, and the same 10GB of data on the other plus another 5GB. Can I just format the first one and setup the array from the second one? Basically, do both drives need to be formatted before setting up the array?

3) Say I have them in the array and I decide I want to copy all of the files on them to another computer, could I just unplug one, plug it into the other computer & copy the files over and then put it back into mine?

Also, I will not be booting from these drives (74GB Raptor for that), they will be storage only

Anything else I should be aware of?

Thanks.

1) yes
2) yes the array should rebuild and add the data but you may have to swap the drive postions meaning boot off the 2nd drive that has the added data
3) yes hook it up as a slave and transfer the data ..I'd guess it wouldn't boot ..unless it was the same chipset etc etc

I do want to know why you'd want to move to a Mirror? although you'd get faster reads the writes are going to be slower

No booting from these drives. See edit.
