So I know certain mobos and most, but not all, Xeon CPUs on the LGA 1366 platform support dual processor configurations.
My question is, can you put in two different types of CPUs in the same dual socket motherboard?
For example, start of with a Xeon E5620 (Quad Core) and add a Xeon E5645 (Hexa Core) later? Do they have to be the same CPU configuration is what I am asking.
Edit: Found my answer
If all of those are met, then you can run the CPUs together. The CPUs run at the speed of the slowest CPU.

- CPUs must have the same QPI and RAM speed to work together.
- CPUs must have the same thermal profile (TDP) to work together.
- The CPUs must have the same number of physical cores to work together.
- The CPUs must have the same number of logical cores to work together.
- Stepping does not matter.
- Clock speed does not matter.
