Whats the point of overclocking?

I have a E6750 Dual Core. Wondering if it was enhance my performance for games.
 
overclocking increases overall performance of your pc, with that cpu, i dont know if you would see any gained performance in games, it depends on your other components, mainly the ram and gpu. if u have a card from like 2001 then obviously you would see no performance increase where as if you had an 8800 GTS or GTX you could see considerable performance increases in cpu heavy games.
 
I have 2 gb of crucial ballistix 1066. and i have a xfx GeForce 8800 GTS. would it make a difference
