Question on case fans.

Im planning on building my first system within this month. But I still have not found a case. I was looking at this antec file server case. It comes with 2x80mm fans but I see most of the more popular cases come with 1x120mm fans. Does that that give the same cooling. Im going to make a fast 64bit gaming machine with a 9800 pro video card and a gig of ram. If anyone can give me some case buying tips that would be helpful. O and one other thing I want to get the 2- 512-400mhz corsair ram chips. But there is one with the same specs except it says it has a platium heat spreader. What does that mean and is it worth paying another 8 dollars to get that type?

120mm's are generaly much quieter than 80mm's and they usually have higher CFM. I would rather have a good 120mm than 2 80mm's... of course, it all depends on your setup.

For the memory, its nice to have heat spreaders on your memory because it heats up just like everything else. You can buy the cheaper ones and then buy your own heatspreaders but for $8, why not.

Like the person said above. 1-120mm fan would most likely be better than a set of 80mm. I say most likely, because some 80mm fans perform better than a single poor 120mm. You will likely get more noise though from the 80's as mentioned above.

As far as the Corsair question, the platinum heatspreader you are speaking of is only a color difference from the black version. Other then that, they are identical in nature. There is no special quality or benefit over the black otherwise. Non heatspreader, well that is still up in the air, there are some that swear against them, and others that are much for them. Personally I know they dont always give better memory cooling, but I handle my memory a lot and therefore like to have the safety of the heatspreader agaisnt memory chip chipping and such.

As for tips on buying cases, buy the case you like the function and looks on and mod the case to your needs... That is the fun part...

when I changed from a Full Tower(un-moded) case with 6 80mm fans, to a new mini-tower with 2 full size 80s, a Slim 80, and a 120, my case temps dropped 10 degrees, it's about 2 times quieter, and it doesn't weigh a ton and a half.

Get better air flow with 3 80's pulling air in, and 120 pushing air out then I did with the 6 80mm fans before. And its quieter, and it runs cooler(even after installing a 6800GT in it).

Yeah, I think I'm a 120mm convert, actually looking to see if I can mod the front 80 into a 120 and quiet it down somemore.

Off topic, anyone know if there's a duct that will adapt a 120mm fan and narrow the flow path to an 80mm? Got a slim 80 pushing through a duct onto my HSF, but figure a 120 with a duct would work better.

Do you mean something like this adapter? http://www.frozencpu.com/cgi-bin/frozencpu/duc-20.html

Yeah i got 2 panaflo 120x38 mm in the front of my case, and its quieter than the 4 80's i had up there before. 2 80s in the back and I am set...really, if you can get a 120 in the front and one in the back, your airflow should be set, unless you want more in the side panels or top etc.
You want to get a case big enough to mod but with good airflow. Not TOO hard to find.
any chieftec or chenming case has 2x80mm in the back, and room to mod up front. I would show what i did to mine, but i dont got the camera handy.

Several cases have 120mm fans for both intake and exhaust, and with a good power supply, should provide plenty of ventilation. I built a good friend a high-end gaming rig earlier this year using an Antec Super Lanboy and Antec True Blue 480 PSU, and it's super quiet and plenty cool. The heatsink fan is a big consideration, too. Remember that larger fans can provide the same cooling at lower noise than smaller fans. As for heatspreaders on memory, they're primarily for looks, but certainly can't hurt.

A few excellent cases:
