Question on 24" ACD...

I run a pair of Samsung T240s right now... but well... they're Samsung T240s. :eek:

In any case, I was looking into refurbed 24" ACDs, which aren't TOO awful at $600. In any case, as long as I pick up a DVI -> Mini-DisplayPort adapter, everything will play nice, right? I couldn't care less about the USB hub / integrated speakers and webcam.
 
I don't think a DVI->mini dsiplay port adapeter exists, where the source is DVI and the display is miniDP, since they are different carrier technology. They exist where the source is miniDP outputing a DVI-D signal, but that is all. You will need a DP source to use the 24" ACD, and a DP->miniDP adapter. Unless someone has developed an electronic adapter (doubtful), which would probably introduce several issues.

Wait wut? Adapter cables are unidirectional? :confused:

I was assuming I could just use the Apple adaptor that's like $22.

Macbooks can output a DVI/HDMI(/VGA?) signal through their mini-displayport connection. The ACD will only take a displayport signal over its mini-DP cable. So you need a card that will output a DP signal, and an adaptor to connect it to the ACD's mini-DP cable.

The mini-DP connector on the ACD itself is male by the way, so you need a female adaptor for it (which ToastyX has tracked down.) The adaptor Apple sells has a male mini-DP connector, so if you bought that you would have a sausagefest and that won't help you at all. You need a video card with a Displayport output and the female mini-DP adaptor. IIRC the leaked photo of the 5870X2 showed a DP output, so with the next series of cards we should be set.
 
Okay, I got the sausagefest bit... but why can't you just use a DVI -> Mini-Displayport female adaptor?

Your user name fits you well. Macbooks with miniDP can output DVI signal from their miniDP, that's why the adapter exists. But Your DVI output on your PC cannot output a DP signal, which is different than DVI. You must have a DP signal to use the 24" ACD, and it must be a miniDP connector to fit the monitor. Nothing converts DVI to DP for now, so you must have a graphics adapter with native DP, and then the DP to miniDP adapter.

What vick1000 said, and there is no such adaptor anyway. Apple sells a male mini-DP to female DVI adaptor, and that's as close as they come.
