are you guys overclocking the cache as well? (l3 cache and ring bus are decoupled from the core on haswell, so upping the core clock will not automatically overclock the l3 cache).

Yes, although I haven't tested for performance yet. Just trying to scope my chip's capabilities.

Unfortunately, I can't find a utility that reports what my default voltage is. The BIOS is blank where it seems like it should report it, and the Intel tuning utility just shows "default." That said...
45x cache ratio with 1.25v manual cache voltage seems stable. 1.2v and 1.23v are not stable.
46x cache ratio with 1.325v manual cache voltage seems stable. 1.3v is not stable.
47x cache ratio with 1.375v manual cache voltage is not stable.

I hope that helps you.

thanks for the info. have you tried using the monitoring utility that came with the motherboard? or is it an intel motherboard?

the aida64 cpuid tool seems to be fairly accurate. at least, more accurate than coretemp and cpu-z.

So CPU voltage has no effect on cache stability? In the middle of doing an OC on mine and what I notice from a lot of hte online videos is they talk about how you should get your cache close to your clock speed but they all seem to leave it on auto.. and from what I am seeing.. auto on my board just stays at 39.

I'll try some more tools, although I doubt the cache swings too far from the voltage you set it to.

Auto on my Asus board will also put the cache at 39x. And no, CPU voltage does nothing for the cache. You should see a separate voltage knob for "Uncore" or "Cache." I used to leave mine on Auto with decent success. I started using manual voltages so I could get a handle on the voltages it was using.

No idea how much the cache speed matters on these chips. I remember that Nehalem chips had some peculiar behaviors where a slower Uncore speed actually improved performance. In most cases it was pretty much a wash. The cache is really just a mechanism to increase the apparent memory bandwidth seen by the CPU, which is why there is such a small difference in practical performance between DDR 1600 and DDR 2400.

But hey, if 46x cache doesn't increase temps, why not do it?

^ Same thing on my MSI Z87-GD65. "Auto" will increase the uncore proportionately up until 39x, then stop there.

Nice, I would like to seem some benches to see if it really matters. Asus says in a video to get the cache as close as possible to the CPU multi and that you don't want a big spread between the two. If it makes little differene im not upping mine any IF it requires more voltage.. meaning more heat.. noise.. etc
