Question concerning steering wheel mod

Ok, got a question for you USB guru's out there.

I want to get a pair of pedals I can use as a seperate device from my HOTAS joystick setup. I know I could buy a pair of CH Pedals but they want $100 for them alone. I would rather mod something cheaper :D

My idea was to buy a cheap steering wheel from Frys (Logitech WingMan Formula GP or similiar) for $25 cutting the cable between the wheel and the pedals. Then rewiring a USB connector onto the wiring leading from the pedals.

Anyone have any idea if this would work or not? All I want them for is to be able to use them as 2 axis for use as either rudders or pedals.
