Question about Socket A FSB:RAM ratio

Hi everyone,

Everything that I have read indicates that Socket A proc run best when the FSB and RAM are run at the same speed. If I were to buy say DDR500 ram and was running my proc at 200MHz FSB, would it be faster then to set up a 5:4 ratio and run the RAM at DDR400 speeds or would it run better keeping it at DDR500?
 
from what i hear theres no practical reason to run fsb higher than what your ram can do cause there isnt enough bandwidth?
 
Yes, but what I'm wondering is, is there a practical reason to run you RAM faster than your fsb?
 
Not really... basically it will just bottleneck and you'll get the lowest common denominator of performance. Better off just syncing it at the lower number.
 
it is a general rule to never run your ram faster than you cpu.....always use a 1:1 ratio beyween them. You will have less performance and to much cpu or ram bottleneck if you try to run them at different speeds of each other.

thats just my 2 cents
 
Thanks everyone. I guess my next question then would be, is there a way to reliably test the upper limits of my chip? For example, I don't want to buy DDR500 ram only to find out that my chip will only do 210FSB stable, conversely, I don't want to buy DDR400 and never know that my system could have done 240FSB.

Hopefully that makes sense? I'll try to clarify more if it doesn't.

As a general rule of thumb it's not your CPU that limits the FSB speed. Provided that the CPU is unlocked and you can successfully alter the multipliers on it then you should be able to jack up your FSB to just about whatever you want. It's the motherboard and RAM components that will be your weak point with FSB clocking.
 
Well.... my CPU is multiplier locked unfortunately, so I probably won't be able to go too much more than I have already. But hey, its my first OC, you live and you learn right? Who knows maybe once I buy some better ram, my CPU will surprise me even though I'm stuck with an 11 multiplier.

Even if it is locked you should be able to access all the multipliers below 11. So just set the multiplier to 9 and keep uping the FSB till you hit a limit.
