Question about partitioning

I just got a new computer and a new harddrive(250 gig SATA) and I was wondering whether it would be good to partition the HD into two, one for the OS(maybe 10 gigs ? I haven't installed XP yet), and the rest for everything else. Would this increase the performance of my computer? If it does, how do I go about doing it? Thanks!

ALSO: what's the best way of transfering all my junk from my old harddrive to my new one? Thanks again.

If you're going for two partitions, I'd just make one partition for applications and windows, and a second partition for data like your documents, work, music, photos, etc. No point in separating the applications from Windows XP as a reinstall of the OS would render an application partition pretty useless and you wouldn't gain performance. It's still the same hard drive.

To transfer data from old drive - connect the other drive to your new system, boot into your OS, and copy the files over.

I'd probably give WinXP + Apps around 30-70GB, depending on what you will install.

Ahh, I see. Thanks a lot guys. Is the partitioning what I need to do when I'm installing the OS or before I install the OS? Also, my old HD is NTFS, will it work if I just plug it in and go?

When you're installing Windows you will get to the point where you decide where to install it to. You can create partitions on that screen. Then you choose the partition to install to. Remember to read the instructions, because if the hard drive is new, you could potentially just end up with one 250 GB partition if you just keep pressing the "Enter" key.

And yes, as long as the filesystem is supported in Windows XP (NTFS and FAT32, basically), you will have no problem hooking it up and copying files over.

Also, you might need to take ownership of files in order to copy or access them. Consult this link if that is the case.
