Question about heatsink weight...

How much does the weight matter? I've read a lot of reviews of heatsinks lately that mention that one of their downfalls is that it is too heavy. I know that AMD (that's what I have) have limits as to what should be on your CPU. But how much is too much? Is an extra few ounces or even a pound or two going to cause a ton of problems? What type of problems will you see if you have too heavy of a heatsink?

I'm not familiar with this at all and was just curious what you guys think about this.
 
Im not aware of any heatsinks that are dangerously overweight, but when you get into the huge, all copper, brick sized heatsinks, you can run the risk of crusing some badly protected cpus if you move/shake/drop/kick the case. As long as you have a cpu shim, or perhaps a heatspreader you should be sufficently safe from worrying about killing the processor as long as you treat it good ;D

Cool, I didn't think any would be a huge issue. And I can't say I drop or kick my case often :)
I'm very nice to my computer (as long as it is nice to me)
 
You'd probably want to consider unmounting the heat sink if you ever have to move the case, especially in a vehicle. Carrying the case around, you'd probably be fine, but you can't really supervise all of the shocks you'd get in a car.
 
Yeah I have been thinking about this too. Those all copper heatsinks have amazing results, but they are so heavy. I think there is some hardware you can buy that mounts to the back to provide some support for the heatsink. Ill try to find something.

thats not for support thats for installing a bolt on slk onto a motherboard that has the socket close to motherboard risers or its because some motherboards have resistors and caps dangerously close to the screw holes on the underside

any slk that ends in U is bolt on... any one of those will do nicely

my slk-800 is a bit heavy but the socket keeps it still quite nicely and it doesnt even have the 4 pads to stop it from moving around :p i transport it in my car quite often never dropped my case; if i did that first thing to go would be my graphics card or agp slot :eek:
 
The manufacturers spec a certain max weight for heatsinks mainly for OEM suppliers. This is calculated according to max expected g forces during shipping so that the heatsink does not damage the CPU or mobo as a result of a bump. I've seen (and had) heatsinks the size of small motorcars ( :D ) installed so that the mobo is visibly bent under the strain. They make them tougher than they look. Just don't go drive an off-road rally with your system in the boot.

Don't transport your PC standing up. Lie it down, so that the video card and CPU heatsink are facing up. Even if you accidently bump the case, the CPU and graphics card will just be pressed down into their respective sockets, if anything at all.
