what does it mean when people call a computer is used for 'folding'?

Check out the "Distributed computing" subforum or www.hardfolding.com . The FAQs there can probably do a better job explaining than me, but basically when someone is "folding" they are running a program on their computer that uses spare CPU cycles to calculate how proteins will fold for cancer and other types of medical research. By knowing how these proteins can fold up scientists can better understand diseases and develop cures and medecines. :)

Stop by the distributed computing subforum and ask the same question and I'm sure many would be glad to help you. :cool:
