I'm just wondering about TN, PVA and IPS panels. Now when it says something like 92% color gamut coverage.....now If a PVA has that and a TN has it as well.........do the image look differently?? Whats the story with that?
I never heard that there is a wide Gamut tn panel. And there would not look the same because tn panel simply can not show the number of colors that PVA and IPS can.
colour gamut (colour space available) is related to backlighting technology as opposed to the panel itself. You can get various types of backlight units such as White-LED, CCFL, W-CCFL, RGB LED etc. Each of them could in theory be used with any of the common panel technologies. So you will see some TN Film panels with LED backlighting for instance, and some IPS panels with just normal CCFL backlighting. The backlighting determines the colour space which can be displayed relative to the full spectrum which the human eye can see. The gamut / colour space is then also commonly compared with some reference colour spaces such as the sRGB space, AdobeRGB or the NTSC space.
If you have two screens with the same gamut, all it means is that they can theoretically display the same colour space and spectrum as one another. the differences in appearance to the user relating to panel technology still apply though (colour accuracy, viewing angles, black depth, colour depth etc).
