Quality or Performance?

I'm referring to the slider setting available in all graphics drivers.
At one end there's "Performance" and at the other end there's "Quality".
Moving the slider between the ends have a measurable impact on the frame rates, but I can't see any difference in image quality.

What are the differences in "quality" that changes when the different settings are used? (What good is it to use any other setting than maximum performance?)

Cheers

its basically the idiot proof way of doing the global graphic settings in your drivers instead of going in and manually changing stuff if you are refering to nvidia's drivers.... by default just leave it on quality unless you are rocking some insanely old tech.. on the nvidia drivers if you set it to advanced then go into the manage 3d settings you can manually change stuff based on the game or globally change stuff.. the slider will globally change the settings from every game..
