It looks like we have made it to the top 50 teams finally. We also seem to be 21st for RAC. I should have another earner soon when I get my old Lenovo hooked back up.

On a side note, I have been informed that they no longer have funding for development. This was brought up back in April, but I was hoping some things would change. I had asked Carle if perhaps tapping into the BitcoinUtopia project could be a consideration and he really didn't seem like there was much interest as everyone involved with the project has pretty well moved on. From his messages to me, I'm betting this project fades out over the next year or two.

There has been and will be plenty of science to do on QCN, we're just done with our rounds of funding. We were the first project to use laptops and then USB MEMS accelerometers on this scale, and other projects that followed seem to be getting the money now to go onward. So it's not like it's a loss - as usual with science people take up where others left off etc. I plan to keep the servers etc running at least through August 2015.

I'd recommend only running QCN if you already have a supported sensor, ie don't buy a new one, as the project may be totally shut down in a few months. The Stanford professor is moving to CalTech and it's unsure if they will be able to take on the QCN servers (or if they can be left running at Stanford at all).

This could be really good or really bad. Until then, everyone needs to be attaching their Android devices to the project to help boost our position at Formula-BOINC. Anyone with Lenovo laptops, Macbooks, and HP's with the 3d Drive Guard software should also attach. The project is non-CPU intensive so you wouldn't have to worry about the heat being an issue at this project.

Being in LA I was more than happy to setup one of these sensors. I show I average about 350 points per day on this project. Is that right?

Probably around that number. It isn't high scoring, but then again it isn't using that much of the system.

Funding for QCN is going to end in June because our remaining Stanford connection (Dr. Lawrence) is moving to work at CalTech. This means all of our funding (which isn't too much at this stage) goes back to the NSF - ie it can't be used for hardware, paying for future maintenance or hosting etc. Stanford will no longer be hosting QCN - so we are looking for a new home - possibly a cloud service such as Amazon EC2 or perhaps a web-hosting place such as godaddy. It would probably mean keeping our user tables but our archived data will be offline as it seems Stanford will not allow us to keep our hardware per terms of our NSF grant.

I will be posting updates here on real possibilities and maybe a "gofundme" page. If worse comes to worse, we may have to shutdown and 'mothball' the project at the end of June.

Possible good news

The QCN project servers will be moving to CalTech and will be hosted in the Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences (GPS). The exact dates are uncertain but it will probably be in early June. All of us on QCN wish to thank the staff at CalTech for hosting us (and at relatively short notice). There will probably be a few days "down time" when the servers are transported. The Stanford DNS will point this URL (qcn.stanford.edu) to the new home page at CalTech (probably qcn.caltech.edu). There will be more updates as we get closer to the actual move.

Since I have a sensor I'll probably keep running this project until they shut the servers down. :(

The QCN servers will be packed up at Stanford next Monday (July 13th) and FedEx'd overnight to CalTech. It is hoped that by the end of next week the servers will be online at CalTech and the project will begin running again. We are forwarding our Internet DNS from Stanford to CalTech so that machines connected to "qcn.stanford.edu" will be routed to the new server location automatically (probably qcn.caltech.edu). More information will be sent once things are back up and running - but it's most likely the project will be down the week of July 13th. You shouldn't have to do anything - BOINC will automatically connect once it detects the servers are back up.

QCN Move to CalTech Is Completed 16 July 2015
The move of the QCN project from Stanford to Caltech seems to have gone smoothly. Thanks to all involved at Stanford Earth Sciences and Caltech GPS for making this transition smoothly. There may be kinks to iron out over the next few days; but the project seems to be back up and running. You do not have to do anything on your BOINC account - as the QCN addresses/URLs are being forwarded automatically from Stanford to Caltech. 17 Jul 2015, 3:47:22 UTC

Front page news.

Project has been completely down for a couple of days now. No idea what is going on. Hopefully just some upgrades or maintenance on the servers.

The recent maintenance outage was necessary as the database server was running out of disk space. I archived the trigger data and trimmed the BOINC result tables so that the project should have a year's worth of space at current rates. However, this means that the BOINC credit scripts will be turned off - so there will be no BOINC credits added in future workunits until further notice. If BOINC credits are very important to you, you should probably stop running QCN.

Probably not a wise choice for them long term, but then again the project is on autopilot now..

If no credits will be awarded, I will be pulling it from my two devices currently running QCN.

Well...being NCI, it really doesn't hurt to leave it.
The pros:
Still contributing to science
Still accumulating run time towards your WUProp badge upgrades
Not taking away from other projects

I like the idea of this project, but has anything useful come from it?

Looks like the lost credits aren't totally lost. The admin finally chimed in.

Thank you all for alerting us to this situation. We apologize for the sudden loss of credits and are looking to remedy the situation. We have a backup of the data that was lost, and will restore it once we have finished our work on setting up a new development environment for QCN. (It is this work that led to the accidental removal of credits.) Please bear with us as we continue to work on restoring and improving this project.

This project is down again. Database issues. I am betting that I lose points yet again. They never fixed the loss of credits the last time like they promised.
