I love Quake 4. Lately when I try to play it, my computer reboots. It has happened ever since I added the X1950XTX CF edition to my system. I can't even make it into the menus damnit...
Maybe. That was my first thought, based on previous experience.
I dunno though.... Prey, BF2, Doom 3: Ressurection of Evil, Far Cry, Brothers in Arms, X3, HL2, all work like a charm. I'm playing at 2560x1600 so I don't mind playing a bit older games if I can do that resolution with everything maxed except AA which is at 2X.
Quake 4 also worked fine when I had dual X1900XTX and the same screen. I returned the X1900 CF master in April and picked up the X1950XTX CF master in September. I'm almost sure it worked with the unique drivers from the X1950 CD. I think maybe it's a driver problem based around my unique config.
I was able to get back into the menus by first starting up the game without my custom autoexec (sets render mode to custom, aspect ratio to 16:10, res to 2560x1600). Then I reactivated the autoexec and was poking around in the menus just fine until I turned Open AL back on.... reboot. Now I'm wondering if it's a problem with the latest x-Fi driver...
I was having a similar issue with Quake 4 and more recently, the Battle out of Hell expansion pack for Painkiller. I fixed it both times by installing the newest X-Fi drivers.
It was not my power supply. It was Catalyst AI. My rig really doesn't like Catalyst AI with this game. If I disable it, all is well. For so long I was sure it was the sound card. Now I am playing through it a bit for the second time and for my money I'll take Quake 4 over Prey any day!
