Quad or not to Quad?

Did that site do the CPU benchmark at a higher res than 800x600? I understand doing it at that res to isolate the CPU, but you're going to have a lot more physics to calculate with a higher res showing more stuff on the screen.

No, the HotHardware review doesn't unfortunately. Good point about more physics to calculate at higher resolutions though. It would be interesting to see the results of the same test at 1920x1200 (with dual GTX's, though even that wouldn't factor out the GPU with that game!)

I have had my quad for almost a year now, and to this day i haven't been able to push anything more than 25% of total usage from it. Vista seems to break down things even more so than xp i never see it get above 50% on any 1 core at a time.
As far as the dude who said XP won't use quad core, he's dead wrong. He may be talking about 2 phyical processors but not cores. Quad core runs like a champ and is blazingly fast on XP Pro 32bit and Vista Ultimate 64bit. This processor can handle pretty much anything you throw at it.

I'm no expert on the subject, but don't game physics happen whether or not you're viewing it on the screen? (please someone correct me if I'm wrong)

In Crysis for instance, if I knock down a tree and turn around before it falls down, it's still going to be on the ground when I turn back around to look at it. Something still has to follow through with those instructions whether I'm viewing it or not. Increasing the resolution causes more pixels to be on the screen which obviously limits the GPU.

thanks for the help guys, i probably won't be doing this till feb, so i'll probably geta penryn. any reccomendations?

Part of graphics rendering is if it's within your view in the Z order. I don't know if that still applies with physics, though.

Someone want to blow a barrel in Crysis up sky high and spin around and see if makes a difference? ;)

cool...

my mate now says that he has looked at the thread but doesn't want to sign up and respond because he was afraid that he would be wrong (LOL) so yeh...

i think i will wait for the penryns...

Thanks,do you have anything like that for other quads ? Like Kentsfield,oh,and in that res as well. tia ! :)

Was looking for altered logos identifying the specific "new" 45nm processor chips but, they're using the same old stuff so... from what I can tell, the highest end processors will still be labeled with the logo from the pic above, the Core 2 Extreme. If something new comes out I'll try to get something working. :)

I found a neat pic of the Core 2 Duo and the Core 2 Quad though, just the CPUs themselves as a cutaway showing the inner 'guts' as it were. They're fairly large but, you can get them from Intel's website in the Pressroom.
