Quad core 45W

When will we see a quadcore @ 45W or less? Anyone heard anything?

In the retail market, not for a long time. In the sever market, I think they already exist, but its on the 771 not 775 platform.

I already posted in your AMD forum thread. Intel started shipping 45W mobile quad core CPUs a couple of months ago.

You could always take an 80W quad core @ stock 1.2v, undervolt it to 1.1v and decrease the clock speed by 1/3 to make your own 45W processor. edit: or maybe less cutting down on the clock speed: http://www.behardware.com/articles/717-2/intel-core-2-q9300-e7200.html

I was just hoping I could get something (AMD or Intel) that natively runs @ 45w out of the box without having to fiddle too much with it.

I saw your post in the other thread and I can't find the Q9100 anywhere online that is trustworthy.....if you know of anyplace, please post.

I know about the 50W qq xeons so that might be my next best bet.

wow, so judging by those numbers a Q9300 is actually pretty close to a 45W TDP in real-world performance even at stock speed? and right on par with an E8500...

this is really impressive....its really the only thing that's been holding me back from moving my primary workstation to a quad.

i think that pretty much settles it for me....q9300 workstation, and keep my OC'd e8400 turned off unless i feel like playing a game (main workstation runs linux with a 7600GS...might upgrade the vid card but dont want to pick up anything that'll draw too much power...maybe an 8600gt or something). just need some ddr2 and another s775 mobo...hmm...i guess a vid card as well since its currently using an AGP card

then hold out for the die-shrink'd nehalems next year

those are just AMD ratings (which are average use not peak)

Those are the generic low "wattage" values, not maximum or TDP. Like the link I posted above shows, AMD processors easily hit those ratings with 4x prime which is not even a maximum load. Those processors have around an 80-85W TDP. There are a lot more options around that level.
