QPACK Temperature Display 5V Power

Just got my qpack of friday for my new rig (biostar, 939 opteron 170)

I just opened up my new qpack and i realize that the temperature display on the front is powered through the 5V volt on the molex

Im going to wire it directly to the usb ports which are right beside which are already providing 5V to the area, thus eliminating wires in the case

Anyone done this yet?

Just though it would be good for everyone to know if you dont to avoid having extra wires in the case

I tried it, have sucessfully ended the life of both the front ports and the temp display...
 
Are you sure you connected it correctly (ie in parallel to correct terminals)

I have run many things off USB before (like fans and VFD displays)

Also did it instantly fry, or was it over a longer period that would have been from like melted wires because of too much amps?

500 mA is average for the usb specifications (atleast 2.0 I believe I would have to check to be sure)

So thats like 2.5W (@ 5V)

I cant see it taking more then that
 
I took off the molex connector and wired it to my Zalman fanbus which has a 5V/12V toggle switch. Out of curiousity I tried it on 12V, and now the temp readout is gone. LED still shines bright.

Ordered a replacement LCD through frozen cpu. $20.

Put in an Antec Phantom 350, so I could use the probes to help see internal case temps.
