Q9300 temps seem high

I just ran some benchmarks and looked at Core Temp and the Q9300 was hitting between 64-68 C under load. also it idles at 42-48 C and those temps seem a little high especially since its only 17 C in my room right now. it seems this cpu would probably get even hotter in the summer when its much hotter in my room.


those temps are much higher than my 90nm 5000 X2 gets too. in fact my load temps on the 5000 X2 are only 2-3 degrees higher than the 45nm Q9300 is idling at. so are those temps okay?
 
They're perfectly safe, but they do seem a little high. I suggest you make sure the push-pins are in all the way, but aside from that I can't think of any reason why you'd be getting high temps. Either way, even if you can't lower them at all, don't worry about it. The chip is good for temperatures way higher than that.

okay thanks. I doubt that there will be any game I ever run that will peg all 4 cores at 100% for 15 minutes like I just did either. the heatsink is not the push pin type and appears to be a Dell proprietary cooler.

perhaps changing the thermal paste could help though? I remember years ago a Compaq cpu ran warm and the fan was constantly kicking on. I cleaned off that pad and put some proper grease(dont remember the name) and the cpu ran cooler and fan never came on again.
 
Well, if the cooler does use a thermal pad then using paste instead would probably help. I wouldn't say it's necessary though.
 
hope you aren't fussing about intel burn test... cause those temps are expected

well maybe so on the new Inspiron models. Dell has gotten pretty cheap over the years as the used to stick really robust coolers and underrated power supplies in their comps.

i dont think ive ever seen a dell cooler that was "up to par" except for maybe back in the socket 7 days
 
My Q9300 that I had in the same board in my sig ran that hot too. I don't know if it did, but I replaced it with an E8400 (the Q9300 went bad) and my temps are dramatically lower. I now idle at 26 & 32. 'Same heatsink too. I think the quads are just that much hotter.
 
wow it idles at 50-52 during the day and its not even hot in my room like it would be in the summer. :eek:
 
Mine does the same thing. Idles between 45 & 50C. Prime95 kicks all cores up to around 65C. Of course, I do have mine OCed a bit.

theres no doubt this thing will go in 70s in the summer. plus I havent even put in a card like 9800gt or 4850 which will dump even more heat in there.
 
What are you using to monitor the temps? I noticed very high temps on mine when I got it a couple weeks ago and after some research, I was told to use Real Temp to monitor the temps. My Q9300 @ 3Ghz (1.032v) is in the upper 30's for idle and low 50's for load. I'm using a Scythe Ninja 2 with a bolt-thru kit.

I said Core Temp in my op. it doesnt really matter now since I returned the pc for other reasons. :(
