I recently placed a Q6600 into my Dell XPS 410. I used a credit card to lay AS5 on the Q6600. The coat looked even and I used the recomended amount on the AS website. However the CPU temps idel at 37 C on core 0 and 1 and 31-33 on core 2 and 3.

The cores get up to around 60 after Prime95 has been running for a while. They don't go over 65 C on any of the cores. The temps even out a bit more around 60 or so.

Im just trying to figgure out if i messed up the AS5 application.

I know for a fact that the CPU fan can run at a much higher speed, and I'm wondering if there is a way to bypass the mobo and make a fan controller for the two fans the system has.
 
They procedure I follow is to put a bb sized dab on the center of the cpu. Then carefully place the h/s on top an press down. Give it a try.
 
What cooler are you using a retail stock cooler? Temps sound pretty close to me on the idle and loads. About the only thing you can possibly do with AS5 is place too much and it squeezes out the sides onto the die and shorts something out. But you seemed to have did it right though. Most just goop it on the die and wonder why it isn't doing right

But yea the card trick is how i been doing it for years, anything that will flex enough to skim it works well though.

plus, you have to wait a little,like a week or so for the AS5 to settle and to get tight.. i hope you understand what I mean :S
 
Its the stock Dell heatsink so I would imagine it works about as well as an intel stock one. I have heard that the AS5 takes a while to get to its max preformance.
I just wanted to make sure I wasnt running the chip so hot as to shorten its life considerably. I guess i should have expected way higher temps from this than my E6600.

Also Im looking for a DIY fan controler anyone know where I might be able to find info on one.

Dell CPU fans used to be blowers that exhausted at the rear of the case.

Is that the same?

I would say given the OEM dell cooler it's probably worse than the heatsink that comes retail with Intel, BUT if it's a Dell case like I know Dell cases, then you'll be better off with the Dell heatsink anyway because it at least exhausts out, even though the heatsink is probably all aluminum and not as effiicient. The intel retail HSF just exahusts down and wouldn't be pushed out the Dell case.

You aren't shortening your life on your Proc. Intel suggest 62*C as the highest temperature you want continually on a Q6600. Your fine where you sit. Intel's going to rate that 62 a bit conservatively too to protect themselves. I've heard quite a few overclockers shoot for the mid/high 60's.

Artic Silver has a PDF document that explains you should put the Artic Silver Ceramique and AS5 thermal paste on in a straight single line and smash it down with the heatsink. But I too have used the credit card trick for years and it's worked well for me. Point being that you don't want it on too think. The paste should only be 1-2 molecules thick ideally.
 
Yea those dells have some crazy fan cooling going on. When my friends xps starts up it is way loud but then it cycles down very quickly though.

I'll have to check that pdf out as they must have updated it since i been there.

That rice grain size method in the center of the heatspreader might have been good in the past but now with 2 physical cores underneath the metal I think it's a much better idea that you get a thin layer spread evenly on the whole area of the heatspreader. Intel's IHS' are almost always concave and that might effect your temps as well. But 65c on full prime load is just fine, it will never be close to that in real world use. My Q6600 hits 68c on full prime small load (I keep my fan undervolted because I like a quiet PC) and its been running just fine for months and never goes past 60c in any application or game.
 
My Q6600 reaches 60C when running prime wether i'm at stock speeds and voltages or overclocked. My Zalman CNPS9500 bearly gets warm on the fins, and only slightly warmar at the base and heatpipes. Something tells me the readings aren't very accurate.

As Artic Silver is the defacto Thermal compound company --- they are probably right.

That method is on their site because their main concern is that people will use too much paste which is a very bad idea, and with that method way they completely avoid that possibility. There has been much discussion about this both here and over at XtremeSystems and some very smart people agree that for quad cores the AS method might not be the best idea any more. With concave heatspreaders and 2 physical cores which are not centered anymore, they is NO WAY to guarantee that the paste spreads around evenly and covers the whole area of the heatspreader above the actual cores. But do as you wish, I'm done with this topic some people just like to spite others instead of trying to help.

vict0r means that it takes time to "cure" ^^

If i remember correctly, your computer should have about 100 to 200 hours of use in order for it to cure/settle in. Or I could be mistaken :S But yes, it does take a bit of time, but if you've been monitoring temps, you'll notice them going down a compared to the first time you applied the as5.

One of those pdf's I linked above is specifically written for Intel Quad Cores and is fairly recent. It's still says put it in a single straight line on the CPU and let it mash down. Their specific reasoning is that it avoids miniscule airbubbles in the application which don't transfer heat well. I should think with all the pictures and diagrams they could easily say swipe it with a credit card or other plastic item until it looks very thin exactly like this picture and that direction wouldn't be anymore difficult than stating to put it in a straight line on the CPU as they currently suggest. I've not tested it both ways, and as I've mentioned I've only ever done the credit card method myself....but this next go round I'm going to try their suggestions for the ceramique which involve putting the thin layer entirely over the heatsink and then rubbing it off with a coffee filter or microclothe, and putting a single line on the CPU. The thin layer/wipe off is used to ensure any pits in the heatsink are filled with the paste because they wouldn't get wiped off in a pass of the coffee filter/microfibre

Read the PDFs in their entirety...It makes sense.
 
Like i said, I have. The pictures and directions in the pdf are no different than what they had on their site over a year ago. The Arctic Silver method is old news and many people dispute it now for quads, it maybe alright for a novice but if you are careful with a razorblade you can do a much better job. Not all heatsinks mount the same and the way you have to position some cannot guarantee that the line they suggest will spread evenly across the whole area covered by the 2 physical cores. But the suggestion about filling the pits in the IHS by rubbing a small amount into it is valid.
 
i noticed something weird with my temps also the other day. With my peltier after applying AS5 and playing with it it was around 71° f all day long. Then the next day i fired it up and it was at 81° f all day was very weird indeed. Makes me wonder what happened.
