Hello all,

It's time to upgrade my video card from my GF3 (Ugh!).

The problem is I was all set on picking up a 9600xt (for $150) since that's all I could afford. I've come across some additional funds, and my budget is now about $215. What are my new options? Is a 9800 Pro 128 a good card still? ( I know it's a little bit old). Also, I've seen on bechmarks that the 9800 Pro 128 outperforms the 256. Is this correct?

Thanks for any advice!

Ben

I have a 9800 Pro and it runs Doom 3 awesome, but I've heard that if you go for the cheap 9800SE you can flash and OC it to a Pro for half the price! Maybe someone else can comment on that as I'm not an expert in flashing at all.

overclocking will not fix the problem of half the pipelines, not sure of the success rate on the mods

The GPU is based on the R350 core and is clocked at 325MHz. Also note the 9800SE only uses 4 pipelines versus the 9800 Pro's 8. This will be a huge factor in the performance of the 9800SE and you will see it in the performance benchmarks.

So... is the 256MB an SE card and that's why it runs slower than the 129MB card?

Thanks for the advice guys,

Ben

no.. the 256 pro uses a different architechture thats just not always as fast, especially since 256 megs of vram doesnt really come into play all that often. The 9800SE is ALOT slower than a pro., but if you can mod it you have a hell of a card for cheap.
