Pull the trigger now or wait?

Should I pull the trigger on the Sapphire X800GTO2 ($199) and flash it to an X850XT or would it be better to wait a while and see what happens to prices on nvidia cards in coming weeks (possibly 7800GT)? I have had both ATI and Nvidia cards in the past and I do not have a strong loyalty to either brand.

I don't think the 7800GT will be near that price anytime soon. I would be greatly surprised if the nvidia card prices lowers at all.

Id jump on it. A X850XTPE is beaten ONLY by the 7800GT and the 7800GTX. Third fastest card on the market (with the best IQ) for $200 is a absolute steal. If there was an AGP verison id be ALL over that...

Yea I didn't mean to imply that the 7800GT would be near the same price but I thought maybe it might dip a bit in the coming weeks with ATI's "launch" today. So do you guys think the X800GTO2-->X850XT is pretty close to the 7800GT in terms of in-game performance?

Silicon If I were you what I'd do is get the cheapest 7800 GT off newegg, and use the bill me later so you don't have to pay shit for 3 months. That way you could scrounge up the extra cash.

That's an interesting thought. Can you provide a link or so more information on the bill me later option?

This is not a bad idea, but you better pay it off in the 3 months time as the finance charges are ridiculous...

As usual my personal advice is that if you have to finance a computer part, and its not something you need right away. Don't do it, its bad practice. Just wait till you have the money right away. That way you know it paid for, instead of paying monthly statements, where an emergency pop ups and you don't have the money for that month. Bam your stuck with a high interest rate.

Thanks for the information. I agree and I think I will hold off for now. I think I'll wait a few days and try to decide whether or not I should just grab an X800GTO2. Any thoughts on how far the X850XT is behind the 7800GT?

Depending whether or not you are going to be comfortable with the x800GTO really depends on what settings you want to run and at what resolution..

That article might help with the comparsion between an X850XT and a 7800GT, various game bencmarks, and most of us here see anandtech as a valid source of information

Thanks for the article link. I've been to Annandtech a few times myself. BTW, I noticed your location, are you a 'Bama fan?

I'm a UCLA fan and I met a lot of 'Bama fans when we played you guys a few years back. Nicest and most knowledgeable fans I've met. It sort of turned me into a distant 'Bama fan and I like to see you guys winning again. Roll tide!

Ah thats nice to hear, Roll Tide, its life around here, never been out that way, and I have never seen UCLA play, so I can't return the favor, as long as you are not an Auburn fan :p ...

Either way back on topic, hopefully that info helps.

I have a 17'' LCD right now but would like to eventually upgrade it to a 19'' or possibly that nice Dell 20.1''. So in the short run I plan to play at 1280x1024. Am I going to have to turn around and upgrade in a year if I go with the X800GTO2? Right now I play BF2 and HF2 the most. In the future I'd like to play Oblivion and Quake 4. Currently I'm running a Pentium 4 530 @ 3.4Ghz and using a Geforce 6600GT.

If you aren't going to be over 1280x1024 until a year from now, go for the X800GTO2. By the time you upgrade your monitor and need the extra horsepower, the prices will have fallen on the current-gen cards and you'll get a good deal in the FS/FT forums from people upgrading to the latest and greatest.

Just my $.02.

I agree 100%, never borrow when you can pay in full.

how big is the power consumption difference between the 7800GT and the X800GTO2 -> X850 ?

Bill-me-later sounds like a decent way to build up some credit...

I think you should go GTO2, are u going to be using any AA or AF?
The price for the GTO2 is amazing, have u ever thought of maybe Modding it to an X850xt and selling it on ebay? i mean you wouldnt be lying if it runs x850xt speeds and the bios and card is recognized as a x850xt??

Youd be lying as its badged as a X850XT, and almost certainly voiding its warrenty.

LOL, alright but what if u state you modded it and sell it, mabe you can still make 100 bucks off of it? i mean justt ell the seller its a X800GTO2 which you specially modded to make a X850XT. So they are aware of it, there are plenty of people out there who want performance just are afraid of modding their card. Worth a try and if it doesnt sell, well keep it. thats my take on it

I built an entire new rig with bill me later. BE CAREFULl its hard to say no when you dont have to pay it all at once

if you average all the games anandtech used to bench the 7800GT and x800XT
at 1600x1200 no AA the 7800GT is 12% faster overall.
the 7800GT was faster in all but 1 game, wich the x800XT was only 1% faster in

with 4xAA at 1600x1200 its only 3% faster overall.
7800GT was only faster in 4 of the 7 games. so its really close to even with AA on.

the x850XT is basicly just an OC version of the x800XT, so it would be alittle closer
at 1280x1024 they would be even closer too, maybe even exactly the same

right now the x800GTO2 has the best price/performance ratio on the high end
IF you mod it to an x850XT

Right now I play BF2 @ 1024x768 (med/high) with 2xAA and it runs pretty well with some minor studder. I have a 6600GT though so I'm ready for an upgrade soon. How about Quake 4 and Oblivion, what card should I look at for these games? Should I wait a month and grab a 7800GT or should I get by okay w/ my 6600GT until the next Nvidia launch (January?)?
