PSU wierd noises

So I'm playing guild wars, and suddenly my PSU freaks out and starts chirping like a cicada. It's making loud noises just like the sound of a cicada.

The PSU is a 530W BFG psu that came bundled with my 2 6800gt's. If anyone has any idea what this "cicada like noise" happens to be, please let me know. I'm concerned about it and I really have no idea. :(

Stop the fans with a toothpick to see if the noise stops. If it does, and the warranty is up on the PSU, replace the fan.

Can high temperature make a PSU freak out? I'm wondering if my PSU is getting too hot and that's making it happen, but I'm not even sure if a PSU can get too hot.

I'm actually pretty certain its NOT the fans.

Leaking caps hiss. I suppose there could be a short inside. I had an A.C. Ryan with a short that would make a wicked buzzing noise that would get louder and louder the more load I put on the 12V rail.

another possibility

They dunk the transformers/inductors used in power supplies into varnish during manufacture, to hold the windings in place. Every once in a while a part won't go the full way into the potitng tank or sometimes a manufacturer will forget entirely... the loose windings and loose transformer core will "dance around" a bit and cause noise.

This doesn't cause any reliability problems, but it can be annoying as fuck.

BTW gee is an EE that designs SMPS

I found the source of the noise. You won't believe what it is!

I have a TT Armor case, but regardless of the case, my power supply is fairly close to the source of the problem. My motherboard is a Gigabyte K8NXP-SLI, it came with a weird add-in DPS 6-phase power thingy with an LED fan on it that sits above my CPU waterblock, close to the PSU.

Anyway, the DPS is what was causing the noise, the power supply seems fine! Apparently the puny DPS fan was making this ear-hearting cicada sound!

:p I'm sorry if I caused anyone a head-ache or whatever with my dumb problem. :)
