First off im dog d_ck broke. i have a couple of dead bfg psu's. and 3 older psu's with 20 pin main. one has a P4 connector. can i take a older psu and hack in the +4 to make it a 24 pin main? this will run a i5-750 8400gs and a hard drive
 
They make a 20 pin PSU to 24 pin MB adapter, so it will definately work if you wire it right. I ran an old 420W 20 pin PSU on an X58 board for several months before it finally died.
 
In many cases a 20-pin PSU will work with a 24-pin motherboard without requiring an adapter. Try it and see if it works, providing you have a decent PSU to use.
